The Namma Metro network is set to expand to 77 km with the upcoming 3.1-km extension of the Green Line along Tumakuru Road. Following a safety inspection by CMRS on October 3, services between Peenya Industry and Nagasandra were temporarily suspended. The new 3.14 km line includes three stations: Manjunathanagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara, expected to attract 25,000 to 30,000 additional passengers daily. While all extended Metro projects from phase II are now operational, BMRCL is also preparing to launch the Yellow Line from R V Road to Bommasandra in early 2025, facing delays due to a shortage of coaches.
The Namma Metro network in the city is set to grow to a total length of 77 km in the coming weeks, with the 3.1-km extension of the Green Line along Tumakuru Road anticipated to begin operations this month. At present, the Metro network covers 73.81 km, connecting Challaghatta to Whitefield via the Purple Line and Silk Institute to Nagasandra via the Green Line.
On October 3, A M Choudhary, the commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) for the southern circle, and his team conducted a mandatory safety inspection of the extended Green Line from Nagasandra to Madavara. To facilitate the inspection, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) temporarily suspended services between Peenya Industry and Nagasandra for four hours. Chief PRO B L Yeshwanth Chavan mentioned that the line would open for services once safety authorization from CMRS was received. He added that following approval, an operational study would be conducted to assess train operations on the extended line.
The recently completed 3.14 km Metro line features three stations: Manjunathanagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara, all located close to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC). The new line is expected to bring in an additional 25,000 to 30,000 passengers each day. An official stated that the decision on running alternate trains between Nagasandra and Madavara will be made after the operational study, following the same method used for the launch of the Yelachenahalli to Silk Institute section of the Green Line.
Although there have been multiple missed deadlines previously, the completion of this short segment on Tumakuru Road signifies that all extended Metro line projects from phase II are now operational. In addition, BMRCL is planning to launch the Yellow Line Metro, which will run from R V Road to Bommasandra, in early 2025. However, the 19-km line has encountered considerable delays primarily due to a lack of available coaches.
The expansion of the Namma Metro network represents a significant advancement in Bengaluru's public transport system, promising improved connectivity and increased capacity for daily commuters. With the recent completion of the Green Line extension, residents can expect greater convenience and efficiency in travel. The anticipated launch of the Yellow Line in 2025, despite its delays, highlights BMRCL's ongoing commitment to enhancing urban mobility. As these projects progress, they will play a crucial role in alleviating traffic congestion and promoting sustainable transportation solutions in the rapidly growing city, ultimately benefiting the daily lives of its residents.
