Hyderabad is gearing up for a major metro expansion with the Phase 2 project, including a 40-km line connecting Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to the proposed 'Fourth City' at Mucherla. The project, which involves six new corridors covering 116.2 km, will integrate key areas like Patancheru, Kokapet Neopolis, and Hyderabad's Old City. This expansion, estimated at INR 32,237 crore, is expected to transform urban mobility, especially with the revised airport metro alignment now running via Aramghar and NH-44
Hyderabad is set to undergo a significant metro expansion with the launch of the Phase 2 project, which includes a 40-km metro line connecting Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to the proposed 'Fourth City' in Mucherla. Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) has revised the metro's alignment to now pass through Aramghar and the new High Court campus on NH-44. This adjustment replaces the earlier route via Mailardevpally, Lakshmiguda, and Mamidipally.
This shift accommodates rapid development along the Bengaluru highway, where approximately 5,000 flats are being constructed. The increased activity has made the area a key hub for metro connectivity. HAML Managing Director NVS Reddy projects over 9 lakh passengers will use the extended metro network daily, with high demand expected on the airport line as well as in Patancheru and Kokapet Neopolis.
Phase 2 will introduce six new corridors to Hyderabad's metro system, expanding it by 116.2 km and adding 54 stations. The entire project is estimated to cost INR 32,237 crore, with the 'Fourth City' line alone requiring INR 8,000 crore. This ambitious expansion will help Hyderabad accommodate its rapidly growing population while enhancing connectivity to major economic and residential zones.
The 36.6-km airport corridor will run from Nagole to RGIA, with other key lines including an 11.6-km stretch from Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis and a 13.4-km route from Miyapur to Patancheru. Additionally, a 7.5-km line will finally link Old City areas such as Darulshifa and Falaknuma, although this requires significant road widening and property acquisition.
The project will also feature India's longest at-grade metro line, an 18-km section from Raviryal to the proposed Skill University. Of the 40 km connecting RGIA to Mucherla, two kilometers will be underground, and 20 kilometers will be elevated. The remaining segment will be constructed at road level.
Expected to be completed in phases, the expansion is a crucial step towards modernizing Hyderabad's transportation network, reducing congestion, and boosting connectivity across the region.
