The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the NCR has established a GRAP monitoring control room to oversee pollution control actions in Delhi and surrounding areas. In recent inspections, over 7,000 construction sites were assessed, resulting in environmental penalties for 597 sites and the closure of 56. To reduce dust pollution, the deployment of mechanized road sweeping machines, water sprinklers, and anti-smog guns has been enhanced. Additionally, significant enforcement actions have been taken against non-compliant vehicles and illegal dumping sites in an effort to manage municipal solid waste.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjoining areas announced the establishment of a GRAP monitoring control room earlier this week. This control room is tasked with overseeing the targeted actions being implemented in Delhi and the NCR states under stages I and II, which are currently active.
CAQM reported that more than 7,000 construction and demolition sites in Delhi-NCR were inspected from mid-October until the end of that month. Environmental compensation was imposed on 597 of these sites, while authorities ordered the closure of 56 sites.
To mitigate dust pollution at its source, there has been an increased deployment of mechanised road sweeping machines (MRSMs), water sprinklers, and anti-smog guns (ASGs) throughout the NCR. CAQM indicated that, on average, 81 MRSMs were deployed daily in Delhi alone, with 36 MRSMs operating daily in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to tackle dust pollution from the roads. Additionally, around 600 water sprinklers and ASGs were deployed each day across the NCR.
In terms of enforcing regulations in the vehicular sector, approximately 54,000 vehicles were challaned for failing to possess Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, and around 3,900 overaged vehicles were impounded across the NCR during the past fortnight.
Regarding municipal solid waste management, intensive inspections were conducted for illegal dumping sites across the NCR, resulting in necessary actions taken against these illegal sites. More than 5,300 inspections were carried out, and actions against defaulters for municipal solid waste burning during the GRAP period were also implemented, as stated by the commission.
The CAQM's proactive measures to address air quality in the NCR reflect a commitment to tackling pollution effectively. The combination of rigorous inspections, increased deployment of pollution control equipment, and stringent enforcement actions demonstrates a comprehensive strategy to mitigate air quality issues. As the authorities continue to monitor and manage pollution sources, these efforts are essential in ensuring a healthier environment for the residents of Delhi and its neighboring states.
