IIT Bombay is set to invest around INR 2,000 crore over five years to modernise its infrastructure and teaching methods. Following a review highlighting areas for improvement, the institute plans to enhance classroom technologies with a INR 50 crore investment and expand its built-up area by 75%, adding 20 new buildings. Hostel accommodations will increase from 12,000 to 16,000, and vertical growth is planned to maintain green spaces. Funding will come from loans, grants, and other sources. These initiatives aim to improve the educational experience, maintain IIT Bombay's standing as a top institution, and support long-term strategic growth.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, one of India's premier engineering institutions, is embarking on an ambitious project aimed at transforming its infrastructure and teaching methods. With a focus on enhancing the educational experience for students and faculty alike, IIT Bombay is investing around INR 2,000 crore over the next five years. This development comes in response to a recent review that assessed the institution's performance from 2018 to 2022, highlighting the need for modernisation and improved academic practices.
According to reports by TOI, the review identified several areas for improvement, including the quality of teaching, job placement processes, stress management, and the need for modern facilities. To enhance learning, IIT Bombay will invest INR 50 crore in new classroom technologies.
IIT Bombay has ambitious infrastructure plans that will increase its built-up area from 900,000 square metres to 1.6 million square metres-an expansion of 75%. The institute is currently constructing or planning around 20 new buildings, with about half dedicated to academic use. Additionally, the number of hostel accommodations will rise from 12,000 to 16,000 in the next two to three years, according to K.V. Krishna Rao, the deputy director for finance, infrastructure, and administration. To maintain the campus's green spaces, the state government has approved an increase in the height of academic buildings from 30 to 45 metres, allowing for vertical growth.
Among the new facilities, a building will be dedicated to alumni, featuring a guesthouse and seminar rooms, while another will serve as an international hostel boasting world-class amenities. This expansion is set to significantly change the campus landscape.
The funds for these ambitious projects will come from loans through the Higher Education Funding Agency and grants awarded under the Institute of Eminence status, among other sources. IIT Bombay is also developing a strategic five-year plan and a long-term vision for 2047, informed by the review committee's findings.
These extensive initiatives showcase IIT Bombay's commitment to creating a supportive and innovative educational environment. By improving infrastructure, modernising teaching practices, and expanding research facilities, the institute is well-prepared for future growth and excellence. This transformation not only aims to enhance the student experience but also secures IIT Bombay's position as a leading institution in India and globally, ultimately benefiting its students, faculty, and the broader academic community.
