Delhi's Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has directed power distribution companies (DISCOMs) to accelerate the provision of over 11,000 pending electricity connections to applicants in PM-UDAY unauthorised colonies. Raj Niwas officials confirmed that these connections should be granted within a week to ten days. During a meeting with key officials, Saxena expressed concern over bureaucratic delays affecting residents in land pooling areas and reiterated that a DDA clarification from October 16 resolved lingering confusion. During a recent meeting that brought together key officials-including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner, divisional commissioner, secretary (power), principal commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and the chief executive officers (CEOs) of the two main DISCOMs-Saxena voiced strong concern regarding the bureaucratic delays that have prevented residents in unauthorised colonies, specifically in land pooling areas, from receiving essential electricity services. He emphasized that an official clarification issued by the DDA on October 16 removed any remaining ambiguity about the process, allowing no room for further procedural delays. Saxena directed the DISCOMs to ensure the swift provision of connections within the stipulated one-week to ten-day period, noting that further delays or obstacles would not be tolerated.
He also instructed government agencies involved in the process to refrain from introducing any additional confusion or procedural barriers that might complicate or slow down the delivery of these services. According to officials, this directive seeks to establish a streamlined and efficient process for providing necessary infrastructure to these underserved areas.
The PM-UDAY scheme (Pradhan Mantri - Unauthorised Colonies in Delhi Awas Yojana), launched by the Government of India in 2019, aims to address the longstanding needs of approximately 4 million residents living in 1,731 unauthorised colonies across Delhi. The scheme provides legal recognition and facilitates the transfer, ownership, and mortgage of properties within these colonies, enabling residents to secure property rights and gain access to essential services. By prioritizing access to electricity, a fundamental necessity, Saxena's directive reflects the government's broader commitment to improving living conditions and supporting the rights of those residing in unauthorised areas.
