The house in Hampstead, London, where the renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray and his wife, Bijoya, resided in 1950 during his employment at the British advertising firm D.J. An official from English Heritage, the organization responsible for overseeing more than 400 historic sites across the United Kingdom and for awarding the blue plaques, confirmed that the house has been shortlisted for this prestigious honor. The final decision is expected to take approximately 18 months, due to the extensive queue of cases preceding the address. The property is currently owned by Merilyn Fricker. Ray had spent half a year residing at 50 Willoughby Road in Hampstead, central London, as part of an on-site assignment. His supervisor, Blum, described the experience as a "honeymoon trip," and it proved to be a transformative period in Ray's life. At the time, Ray, who was working as an art director for an ad agency, viewed 99 films during his stay, including Vittorio De Sica's *Bicycle Thieves*, a film that left a lasting impact on him.
Hampstead, London, has long been a residence for the city's elite and renowned figures. Notable individuals who once called this area home include Agatha Christie, T.S. Eliot, Sigmund Freud, George Orwell, and Elizabeth Taylor. The homes they once occupied are now marked with blue plaques, commemorating their historical significance.
Anvaya Ganguly, a UK-based IT professional and devoted admirer of Satyajit Ray, located the house last year. Following extensive research, he submitted an application to English Heritage for the blue plaque, including a letter documenting the London address. Ganguly expressed his hope that the letter would serve as compelling evidence to confirm Ray's connection to the property.
Ray's son, Sandip, and daughter-in-law, Lalita, supplied the letter that conclusively proves Ray once resided in the Hampstead house. Sandip expressed his hopes, stating that it would be wonderful if the house received the blue plaque. English Heritage has acknowledged Ganguly's proposal and is now awaiting a decision from a panel of experts.
In his memoir "My Years with Apu", Ray also referenced the London house. Bijoya Ray noted that they arrived at Norman's home on May 8, 1950. Ray recalled, "We arrived in Portsmouth on a weekday and took a train to Hampstead. Our close friend Norman Clare had arranged for us to stay with his mother as guests. We stayed on the third floor of a three-story house on Willoughby Road, where just a short walk outside left you feeling refreshed."
