NMMC demolishes unauthorized construction in Airoli's Sector 9 following legal notice

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently demolished an unauthorized RCC building in Sector 9, Airoli, after its owners failed to comply with a notice from the Encroachment Department. The structure, located behind Machhi Market and owned by Sagar Nath Rama Madhavi, was being built without the required permits. Despite a notice under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, construction continued, prompting partial demolition of the third floor on 11th September 2024. The NMMC used manual labor due to site constraints. This action, directed by Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, is part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal constructions in the area.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently took swift action against illegal constructions in Sector 9, Airoli. Despite being served a notice by the Encroachment Department of NMMC the concerned individuals failed to adhere to the law. As a result, the Encroachment Department, under the directives of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde and the guidance of Dr. Rahul Gethe, took action against unauthorized constructions in the Airoli area.

An RCC (reinforced cement concrete) building was being constructed in Airoli, Sector 9, Diva Village, behind the Machhi Market. The structure was being erected in House No. 30, belonging to Sagar Nath Rama Madhavi, without obtaining the required permission from Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. A notice under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, issued to the concerned individuals. They were told to remove the unauthorized construction themselves, however continued the illegal construction. As a result, in accordance with the High Court's order in Writ Petition No. 1591/2023, partial demolition of the third floor began on 11th September 2024.

Given the location of the structure, machinery such as poklen and JCB machines could not be used. Instead, the civic body relied on 18 labourers who used 10 hammers and 8 breakers to completed the operation. Officials and staff from the G Department of Airoli were present while the demolition took place.

The Encroachment Department of Navi Mumbai has been taking strict action against illegal structures in the area. This is the one of many such incidents. Residents have been urged to obey the law and obtain all the requisite permits beforehand to avoid demolition. The civic body has issued a warning, stating that in the future such anti-encroachment actions will be intensified.
