The Bengaluru Metro's Phase 3 project has commenced, featuring geotechnical investigations critical for determining the placement of pillars and stations across 22 stations. This phase includes the 32.15-kilometre Outer Ring Road segment, known as the Orange Line, and a 12.5-kilometre stretch from Kadabagere to Hosahalli. An extended section of the Green Line is set for inspection by the Commission for Railway Safety, following successful trial runs. The project, with an extension to Madavara costing INR 298 crore, aims to significantly enhance connectivity for commuters travelling between Tumakuru and Bengaluru.
The Bengaluru Metro's Phase 3 project has officially commenced, with geotechnical investigations currently taking place on significant sections, including the route from Kempapura to JP Nagar 4th Phase and along Magadi Road.
Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has awarded contracts to three firms to carry out soil studies for the 44.65-kilometre stretch of Phase 3. The first firm is managing the initial phase of the investigation from Mysuru Road Station to Kanteerava Studio Station, while the second phase encompasses the area from Hosahalli Station to Kadabagere Station via Sunkadakatte Depot.
The second company has obtained a tender valued at INR 1.32 crore to conduct surveys between Kanteerava Studio and Kempapura Station. A third company, which has also been awarded a tender worth INR 1.32 crore, is tasked with the investigation from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Mysuru Road Station. As per project guidelines, it is stipulated that all soil testing is to be completed within five months.
The geotechnical reports are required to be submitted within 15 months, as they are vital for determining the placement of metro pillars and stations, which will ultimately influence the financial planning of the project. The investigation employs hydraulic drilling machines to create boreholes with diameters ranging from 75 to 100 millimetres, reaching depths of up to 40 metres. These samples deliver essential information regarding the soil and rock composition, assisting engineers in finalising foundation designs and pillar placements. This analysis will also support the selection of suitable construction methods and technologies.
Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 will comprise 22 stations, linking Kempapura to JP Nagar 4th Phase. The project includes the 32.15-kilometre Outer Ring Road (ORR) segment, referred to as the Orange Line, featuring nine stations, along with a 12.5-kilometre stretch from Kadabagere to Hosahalli, which also includes nine stations. The extended 3.14-kilometre segment of the Green Line between Nagasandra and Madavara is scheduled for inspection by the Commission for Railway Safety, taking place earlier this week. This follows the completion of trial runs and signal testing along the route.
The current metro line, which runs from Silk Board to Nagasandra, is being extended to Madavara near the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, with a budget of INR 298 crore. This extension will provide significant benefits to various groups, enabling commuters travelling between Tumakuru and Bengaluru to cover a considerable portion of their journey by metro.
The Bengaluru Metro's Phase 3 project marks a significant advancement in the city's infrastructure, promising improved connectivity and convenience for its residents. With critical geotechnical investigations underway and the upcoming inspections by the Commission for Railway Safety, the project is on track to meet its ambitious goals. The integration of the Orange Line and extended Green Line will not only facilitate smoother transit for commuters but also contribute to the economic growth of the region by enhancing access to key areas. This development is a crucial step towards a more efficient urban transport system in Bengaluru.
