A four year old girl was severely injured as she fell off the balcony of a high rise building in Andheri East in Mumbai from the sixth floor as the housing society had removed the protective glass panels from the balcony for renovation. The girl’s father Kumar Saurabh Prasadhad has filed a complaint against the contractor, citing that the later did not follow due procedure of covering the mesh after removing the glass panels from the balcony.

The police have arrested five people including the builder, contractor and the building secretary for negligence. The girl was taken to the Holy Spirit Hospital and is undergoing treatment for her injuries.

Hillcrest Apartments, where the incident took place, is located on Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road. The housing societies was overseeing general renovation work due to which the glass panelling was temporarily removed. The parents of the injured girl were at work, and she was left in the care of her grandparents when the incident occurred.

According to insiders, the residents of the building were informed about the renovation work a month in advance, but no prior intimation was given even a day before the work began. The family claims that they were called up and informed of the work less than an hour before it began. The grandfather mentioned that the contractor put tape only on a couple of balconies for safety, leaving the others open without any safety measures.

Authorities have rebuked the building committee for failing to notify the residents of the building to keep the balcony doors locked f until the renovation work was completed. Last minute calls to the residents did not give them enough time to inform and prepare their family to stay away from the balcony as it was open and unsafe, especially for children.

The incident at Hillcrest Apartments serves as a wake-up call for building committees to prioritize the safety of residents during renovation work. The lack of proper communication and notification to residents regarding the removal of protective measures on the balconies resulted in a tragic accident. This case should serve as a reminder to builders to provide timely and adequate information to residents, ensuring their safety and preventing such accidents in the future. While the young girl thankfully survived the fall, her path to recovery will be long and challenging.
