A sessions court in Mumbai overturned a magistrate's earlier dismissal and directed criminal proceedings against senior Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officers, including retired officials, for failing to register an FIR in a major MHADA case worth INR 14,000 crore. The complaint, filed by activist Kamlakar Shenoy, alleged that officers deliberately delayed action and avoided legal duties, appearing to protect MHADA officials involved in the irregularities. The court emphasized that neglect of statutory duties by public servants can amount to a criminal offence and ordered proper recording of evidence and issuance of process against the accused.Read more

A BJP MP has raised concerns in the Rajya Sabha over delays and gaps in the implementation of real estate and insolvency laws, especially in Uttar Pradesh. He highlighted that thousands of homebuyers are still waiting for possession despite investing their life savings. Builders, in many cases, have avoided accountability by declaring insolvency. Issues such as incomplete projects, pending government dues, and delays in case resolution under RERA were also flagged. The MP has urged the government to amend existing laws, ensure stricter enforcement, and create a time-bound system so that affected homebuyers can receive justice.Read more

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has limited construction and excavation activities across the city to a 14-hour window, permitting work only between 7 am and 9 pm. The directive follows a rise in complaints from residents regarding noise and air pollution linked to ongoing construction projects. Authorities have stated that violations could attract enforcement action, including stop-work orders. The move is positioned as a response to public health concerns and aims to regulate construction-related disturbances in a city witnessing steady real estate activity. The decision also places additional compliance responsibilities on developers and contractors, particularly as Pune continues to expand into newly merged areas under PMC jurisdiction.Read more

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has approved an amendment to the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, enabling district collectors and divisional commissioners to handle nearly 90% of land-use violation regularisation cases. Introduced by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the reform shifts decision-making from the state secretariat to local authorities, reducing administrative delays and procedural bottlenecks. The amendment introduces a statutory framework, including new provisions such as Section 37A, to replace earlier reliance on government resolutions that often led to legal ambiguity and prolonged litigation. Only high-value or complex cases will continue to be processed at the state level. The move is expected to streamline land governance, improve ease of doing business, and provide faster resolution for individuals and businesses dealing with land-use compliance issues.Read more

The Supreme Court has dismissed a review petition by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), confirming that landowners whose land was acquired for highway projects between 1997 and 2008 are entitled to extra compensation, including solatium and interest. The court ruled that the projected financial burden of around INR29,000 crore cannot justify denying statutory rights. It also set a cut off date of March 28, 2008, limiting claims to unsettled cases. Compensation already paid cannot be recovered. The ruling strengthens landowners rights while maintaining legal certainty.Read more
