The government in the holy city of Varanasi has approved a major expansion plan worth INR 2,869.65 crore for the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. This significant investment will transform the airport, nearly tripling its passenger handling capacity and prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Currently, the airport handles 3.3 million passengers annually. This often leads to congestion, especially during peak travel seasons. The expansion will significantly address this issue. The total passenger handling capacity will jump to a massive 9.9 million passengers per annum (MPPA).

A key highlight of the project is the construction of a brand new terminal building. This state-of-the-art terminal will encompass a vast area of 75,000 square meters. Designed for efficiency, it will be able to accommodate a staggering 6 million passengers per year (MPPA) and handle 5,000 passengers during peak hours (PHP). This translates to shorter queues, smoother check-ins, and a more relaxed travel experience for millions of visitors.

The expansion goes beyond just a new terminal. The runway will be extended to a length of 4,075 meters, with a width of 45 meters. This significant extension will allow larger aircraft to land comfortably at Varanasi. This could open doors for more direct flights from both domestic and international destinations, offering travelers greater flexibility and convenience.

The project prioritizes environmental sustainability, making the airport a leader in eco-friendly practices. The new terminal will utilize solar energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, the design incorporates features to promote waste recycling and reduce the overall carbon footprint. Natural lighting will be maximized, further minimizing energy consumption.

Boost for Tourism and Local Economy

This substantial investment is expected to have a positive ripple effect. Improved air connectivity will likely lead to a surge in tourism, bringing more visitors to Varanasi and boosting the local economy. Hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops can all expect to benefit from the increased tourist traffic. Easier access will also make Varanasi a more attractive destination for business travelers and potential investors.

The expansion of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is a welcome development for Varanasi. It signifies a commitment to improving travel infrastructure and making the city more accessible to visitors. With a modern and efficient airport that prioritizes sustainability, Varanasi is well on its way to becoming a world-class travel destination, all while preserving its rich cultural heritage and spiritual significance.
