Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari reviewed the quality and maintenance progress of National Highways spanning 8,512 km in Andhra Pradesh and 3,748 km in West Bengal on June 1, following feedback and concerns received through media reports and social media platforms. The review focused on strengthening highway infrastructure standards, improving maintenance practices and ensuring safer and more efficient road connectivity.
According to an official statement, Gadkari instructed officials to expedite on-ground execution of maintenance and improvement works while reinforcing quality monitoring mechanisms across the highway network. He stressed the importance of adopting modern construction methodologies aimed at enhancing asset longevity, improving riding quality and ensuring seamless transportation links.
The minister also highlighted the need to incorporate advanced technologies in highway development and maintenance. Such measures, he noted, would support the creation of sustainable and efficient transport infrastructure while facilitating connectivity, economic activity and commuter convenience.
A significant part of the review was devoted to preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season. Gadkari directed officials to undertake comprehensive preventive measures, including effective drainage management, slope protection works and the establishment of quick-response systems. These interventions are intended to minimise traffic disruptions, reduce infrastructure damage and enhance safety for road users during periods of heavy rainfall.
The meeting included detailed discussions on several technical and operational aspects related to highway quality and maintenance. Among the key areas reviewed were reinforced earth (RE) walls, road safety audits, signage systems, plantation and landscaping initiatives, precast construction practices, rectification of accident-prone black spots, expansion joints and the establishment of logical project termini.
Material quality and compliance with prescribed construction standards also formed an important component of the review. The ministry assessed ongoing efforts to ensure that highway projects adhere to approved specifications and deliver durable infrastructure capable of meeting long-term transportation requirements.
Gadkari directed all stakeholders involved in highway development and maintenance to implement corrective measures within stipulated timelines and ensure strict adherence to established quality benchmarks. The review reflects the ministry’s continued focus on monitoring highway assets and addressing public concerns related to infrastructure quality, maintenance standards and commuter safety across key stretches of the National Highway network in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
