The Ministry of Railways has approved a new stoppage for the Solapur–Hassan Express at Channarayapatna railway station in Hassan district, providing improved rail connectivity for passengers travelling across Karnataka and Maharashtra. The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V. Somanna during a South Western Railway programme held in the region.
The new halt fulfils a long-standing demand from residents of Channarayapatna and nearby areas who had sought better access to long-distance rail services. The station also serves as an important access point for Shravanabelagola, one of Karnataka's major pilgrimage destinations, attracting visitors from across the country throughout the year.
The stoppage has been introduced on an experimental basis and became operational during the past week. Under the revised timetable, Train No. 11311 Solapur–Hassan Express and Train No. 11312 Hassan–Solapur Express will stop at Channarayapatna for one minute in both directions. The addition is expected to improve travel convenience for passengers commuting between Hassan district and destinations across Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Speaking at the event, Somanna indicated that the demand for the halt had been pending for several years and stated that the railway ministry had taken steps to address local connectivity requirements. He further indicated that additional train services could be considered in the future depending on passenger demand and operational feasibility.
The Solapur–Hassan Express is an important rail link connecting several cities and towns across Karnataka and Maharashtra. The inclusion of Channarayapatna as a scheduled stop is expected to enhance access to the railway network for residents, students, business travellers and pilgrims who previously had to depend on nearby stations for boarding and deboarding.
Apart from announcing the new halt, the minister highlighted ongoing railway infrastructure development in Hassan district. Hassan railway station has been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at an investment of around INR 32 crore. Redevelopment work worth approximately INR 22 crore is also underway at Arsikere railway station, while station improvement works continue at Sakleshpur as part of broader railway modernization efforts.
The minister also reviewed railway safety initiatives and network expansion projects being undertaken across the country. He noted that Indian Railways has eliminated nearly 13,800 level crossings over the last decade through the construction of road overbridges and underbridges. In Karnataka alone, work is underway at more than 400 locations out of the state's 707 level crossings to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion.
According to Somanna, Indian Railways has sanctioned projects worth nearly INR 2.94 lakh crore across the country to strengthen transportation infrastructure, improve passenger amenities and enhance regional connectivity. He also stated that around 37 train services suspended during the Covid-19 period have resumed operations, while several existing services have been upgraded with additional coaches and improved operating speeds.
The latest stoppage for the Solapur–Hassan Express forms part of wider efforts to improve rail accessibility in tier-II and tie
