• The Dalmandi road widening project in Varanasi has gained momentum, with 112 buildings demolished so far as part of a major infrastructure upgrade.
• The project aims to widen the congested 650-metre stretch connecting Naisadak and Chowk, improving access to the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor.
• Nearly 187 properties have been identified for acquisition and demolition under the project, which carries an estimated cost of around INR 224 crore.
• Authorities have completed compensation and acquisition procedures for several affected property owners, allowing demolition work to progress.
• The redevelopment is expected to ease congestion, improve pedestrian movement and strengthen connectivity within Varanasi's historic commercial district.
The Dalmandi road widening project in Varanasi has entered an important phase, with authorities demolishing 112 buildings so far to clear the way for a major connectivity upgrade in the city's old quarter. The project is aimed at easing congestion in one of Varanasi's busiest commercial areas and improving access to the Kashi Vishwanath Dham precinct.
Officials said demolition work has accelerated in recent weeks following the completion of compensation and property acquisition formalities for several affected structures. The clearance drive is being carried out under strict security arrangements, with police personnel and administrative teams deployed across the area to ensure smooth execution of the project.
The infrastructure initiative involves widening the approximately 650-metre stretch between Naisadak and the Chowk area. The existing route, known for its narrow lanes and dense commercial activity, has long faced traffic bottlenecks, especially after the significant rise in visitor movement towards Kashi Vishwanath Dham in recent years.
According to project plans, nearly 187 buildings have been identified for acquisition and demolition. With 112 structures already removed, authorities have made substantial progress on a project that is expected to reshape mobility within one of the city's oldest marketplaces. The widening exercise is part of a broader urban infrastructure push aimed at improving traffic circulation and pedestrian access in Varanasi's heritage zones.
The project is estimated to cost around INR 224 crore and includes land acquisition, compensation payments, demolition activities and infrastructure development. Property owners affected by the project have been compensated under the acquisition process, enabling authorities to move forward with implementation.
Dalmandi has historically served as a major trading and commercial hub in Varanasi, attracting high daily footfall from residents, traders and visitors. However, its narrow roads have increasingly struggled to handle growing traffic volumes. Urban planners and local authorities have for several years highlighted the need for road expansion to improve accessibility and support the city's evolving infrastructure requirements.
Officials believe the widened corridor will provide a more direct and efficient route towards the Kashi Vishwanath Dham area while reducing pressure on alternative roads that currently experience heavy congestion. The project is also expected to support better movement of emergency services, improve pedestrian safety and facilitate smoother traffic flow in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The ongoing work forms part of larger efforts to modernise infrastructure in Varanasi while addressing longstanding mobility challenges in the city's historic core. As demolition and acquisition activities continue, the focus remains on completing the remaining clearances and advancing the next phase of road development.
