Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is progressing a series of transport infrastructure projects aimed at improving mobility across Mumbai and its suburban regions. These include the operational Mumbai Monorail network, Metro Line 2B, ongoing improvements to the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR), and the Golden Nest Flyover in Mira-Bhayandar. Together, the projects are expected to enhance multimodal connectivity, reduce travel times, ease congestion on key corridors and support the region’s growing residential and commercial hubs. The initiatives form part of MMRDA’s broader strategy to create an integrated transport network across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) continues to advance several transport infrastructure projects across the metropolitan region as part of its efforts to improve connectivity, reduce congestion and strengthen integration between various modes of public transport.
Among the key projects is the Mumbai Monorail, India’s first monorail system, which was developed to function as a feeder service to the city’s larger mass transit network. The approximately 20-km corridor connects Chembur and Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk via Wadala and serves areas characterised by dense development and limited road width. The project was implemented in two phases, with the first section between Wadala and Chembur becoming operational in 2014 and the remaining stretch opening in 2019. Operations and maintenance of the corridor were transferred to Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) in December 2023, marking a new phase in the management of the transit system.
MMRDA is also progressing Metro Line 2B, a 23.643-km elevated corridor connecting D N Nagar and Mandale through 20 stations. The line is expected to play a crucial role in improving east-west connectivity across Mumbai by providing interchange facilities with Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3 and 4, the Mumbai Monorail, Central Railway, Western Railway and the city’s major highway corridors. A dedicated depot is under construction at Mandale, and the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel times while improving access to commercial districts, government establishments and residential neighbourhoods.
Road infrastructure projects also form an important component of MMRDA’s development pipeline. The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR), one of Mumbai’s key east-west connectors, continues to support traffic movement between the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway. Further improvements and connectivity enhancements on the corridor are aimed at easing congestion and improving access to major destinations such as Bandra-Kurla Complex, Mumbai Airport and adjoining business districts. The corridor has become a critical transport link for commuters travelling between eastern and western suburbs.
In the northern part of the metropolitan region, the Golden Nest Flyover in Mira-Bhayandar is being developed to address increasing traffic volumes arising from rapid urbanisation. The project is expected to improve traffic circulation along a heavily used urban corridor, facilitate smoother vehicular movement and strengthen connectivity between residential and commercial areas. Once operational, the flyover is expected to ease bottlenecks and improve travel efficiency for commuters travelling within Mira-Bhayandar and towards Mumbai.
Together, these projects highlight MMRDA’s continued focus on expanding transport infrastructure and creating an interconnected mobility network capable of supporting the region’s growing population and economic activity.
