• Western Railway has completed the launch of 19 steel girders for a new 12-metre-wide foot overbridge at Marine Lines station as part of station upgrade works.
• The operation was carried out during a scheduled overnight traffic and power block using heavy lifting equipment and a large workforce to minimise disruption to suburban services.
• The new bridge is expected to improve passenger circulation, reduce congestion on platforms and enhance commuter safety at one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban stations.
Western Railway has completed a major phase of construction for a new foot overbridge (FOB) at Marine Lines station with the successful launch of 19 steel girders during a specially planned overnight traffic and power block. The work forms part of ongoing station modernisation and passenger safety initiatives being undertaken at the station.
The operation was carried out during the intervening night of May 30 and 31, when a complete block was imposed across all railway lines passing through Marine Lines station. Railway officials scheduled the work during late-night hours to minimise inconvenience to commuters and ensure safe execution of the project.
According to railway officials, a total of 19 steel girders, each spanning approximately 20 metres, were installed between Platforms 3 and 4. The girders have a combined weight of about 95 tonnes and form a key structural component of the new 12-metre-wide foot overbridge being constructed at the station.
The launching operation required significant logistical planning and deployment of specialised machinery. Two 500-tonne cranes, hydra cranes and a tower wagon were utilised to position the girders, while around 60 personnel, including railway staff and contractor workers, participated in the overnight exercise.
The bridge is being developed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to improve passenger amenities, station infrastructure and circulation facilities across the railway network. Marine Lines station, located on Mumbai’s heavily used Churchgate suburban corridor, witnesses substantial daily commuter movement, making improved pedestrian connectivity a priority.
To facilitate the work, several suburban train services were cancelled, short-terminated or partially cancelled during the block period. Commuters had been advised in advance to check revised train schedules and plan their journeys accordingly.
Once completed, the wider foot overbridge is expected to ease passenger movement between platforms, reduce crowding during peak hours and provide safer circulation within the station premises.
