Synopsis

• A proposal seeking INR 350 crore from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been submitted to extend the runway at Tiruchirappalli International Airport.
• The project aims to enhance aircraft operations and support rising passenger and cargo traffic.
• Stakeholders believe the expansion will strengthen Trichy’s role as a major aviation hub in central Tamil Nadu.

Tiruchirappalli is seeking a major aviation infrastructure upgrade, with a proposal submitted to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for an INR 350 crore runway extension project at Tiruchirappalli International Airport. The proposed investment is expected to improve operational capabilities and prepare the airport for future growth in air traffic.
The runway expansion has been planned to accommodate evolving aviation requirements, including the ability to handle larger aircraft more efficiently and support increasing flight movements. Industry stakeholders view the project as an important step in ensuring that the airport can meet growing demand from both domestic and international travellers.
Over the years, Tiruchirappalli International Airport has emerged as a key air connectivity hub for central Tamil Nadu, serving passengers travelling to destinations across India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Rising passenger volumes and expanding regional economic activity have intensified the need for additional infrastructure capacity.
The proposed runway upgrade is expected to improve operational flexibility, enhance aircraft movement efficiency and create opportunities for airlines to expand services. Improved airside infrastructure could also strengthen the airport’s role in supporting cargo movement and regional trade.
Stakeholders have pointed out that stronger airport infrastructure would benefit industries, educational institutions, exporters and tourism-related businesses across the region. Enhanced connectivity is increasingly being viewed as a critical factor in attracting investment and supporting long-term economic development.
The proposal is currently awaiting consideration by AAI, with local representatives and aviation stakeholders urging an early allocation of funds. Approval of the project would pave the way for detailed implementation planning and subsequent construction activity.
If cleared, the runway extension would add another major milestone to the ongoing modernisation of Tiruchirappalli International Airport, helping it accommodate future traffic growth while reinforcing its position as one of Tamil Nadu’s important international aviation gateways.
