The Tiruchirappalli City Corporation has started construction of a new motorable bridge across the Uyyakondan Canal as part of efforts to improve road connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the city. The project, estimated to cost around INR 1.1 crore, is expected to enhance access between residential areas and support smoother vehicular movement along the Vayalur Road stretch.
Work on the bridge has commenced after civic authorities revived the proposal to address growing traffic pressure in the locality. The new structure will be built across the canal at a strategic location where increasing residential development and rising vehicle numbers have placed additional demand on existing road infrastructure.
Officials stated that the bridge is intended to provide an alternative crossing point for motorists and reduce dependence on existing routes that frequently experience traffic bottlenecks, particularly during peak commuting hours. The project is also expected to improve accessibility for residents living on either side of the canal.
The Vayalur Road corridor has witnessed significant urban growth in recent years, with expansion of housing developments, educational institutions and commercial establishments contributing to higher traffic volumes. Civic authorities have been implementing a series of infrastructure measures to improve mobility and accommodate the area's evolving transportation needs.
