• The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has cleared the Kurukshetra bypass project, paving the way for the start of land acquisition activity.
• The proposed bypass spans around 28 km and is aimed at easing congestion on existing highway routes passing through Kurukshetra.
• The project is part of a broader set of road infrastructure approvals aimed at improving connectivity across Haryana’s highway network.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved the Kurukshetra bypass project, with preparations now underway to initiate land acquisition across multiple villages along the proposed alignment. The decision marks a key step towards advancing highway infrastructure development in Haryana and improving regional traffic flow.
The proposed bypass is planned to stretch for nearly 28 km and is designed to divert heavy and through traffic away from densely populated and congested urban stretches of Kurukshetra. Once implemented, the project is expected to streamline vehicular movement on existing national highway corridors that currently experience high traffic density.
Authorities are preparing to begin land acquisition across a large number of villages falling within the project alignment. The process will involve coordination between NHAI, state authorities and local administrative bodies to facilitate compensation, surveying and clearance procedures required for highway construction.
The bypass forms part of a wider set of highway development initiatives cleared for Haryana, where multiple road infrastructure projects have been approved to strengthen inter-city connectivity and improve logistics efficiency. These projects aim to support growing freight movement and reduce travel time across key transport corridors in the state.
Officials indicated that the Kurukshetra bypass will play an important role in decongesting urban traffic, particularly by diverting heavy commercial vehicles away from city roads. This is expected to improve road safety conditions within Kurukshetra while enhancing long-distance travel efficiency on national highway routes passing through the region.
Infrastructure expansion in Haryana has gained momentum in recent years, driven by rising traffic volumes, industrial activity and increasing integration with national logistics networks. Highway development projects have been prioritised to support economic growth and improve connectivity with neighbouring states.
NHAI is expected to proceed with phased land acquisition in the coming weeks, after which detailed construction planning and execution timelines will be finalised. The project is anticipated to contribute significantly to the state’s ongoing highway modernisation efforts and improve regional mobility infrastructure.
