Synopsis

• South Western Railway has initiated scheduled maintenance works at the Lowry Road Underbridge (RUB) near KR Puram in Bengaluru in early June 2026, triggering phased traffic restrictions across key eastern corridors.
• Traffic movement is impacted across KR Puram, Ramamurthy Nagar, ITI Colony, ITPL and Whitefield, which together form a major residential and IT commuting network.
• Authorities have implemented diversions via the KR Puram cable-stayed bridge and adjoining arterial roads, with both full and partial closures planned between June 4 and June 9, including limited night-time restrictions.

South Western Railway (SWR) has begun scheduled engineering works at the Lowry Road Underbridge (RUB) in the KR Puram area of Bengaluru in early June 2026, resulting in temporary traffic restrictions across one of the city’s key eastern mobility corridors. The works are being undertaken to replace structural slabs and carry out essential maintenance of the underbridge located beneath an active railway line.
The intervention is being executed in a phased manner between June 4 and June 9, 2026, with closures varying by stretch and timing depending on the stage of work. The affected route serves as a major connector between KR Puram, Ramamurthy Nagar, ITI Colony, ITPL and Whitefield, all of which are significant residential clusters and employment hubs within Bengaluru’s IT corridor.
As part of the traffic restriction plan, the stretch beneath the Lowry Road Underbridge towards Ramamurthy Nagar and ITI Colony has been fully closed to vehicular movement during the scheduled maintenance period. In addition, traffic movement towards ITPL and Whitefield via the same corridor has also been restricted. A short-duration night-time closure has been scheduled on a section of the KR Puram–ITPL Main Road between June 7 and June 8, 2026, to facilitate uninterrupted engineering work.
To manage traffic disruption, diversion arrangements have been put in place in coordination with traffic authorities. Motorists are being directed to use the KR Puram cable-stayed bridge as the primary alternative route for connectivity towards Whitefield, ITPL and adjoining areas. Additional diversions across feeder roads have been planned to distribute vehicular load and reduce congestion on key junctions.
The Lowry Road Underbridge is a critical infrastructure link in KR Puram, positioned beneath an operational railway corridor and carrying heavy daily traffic between eastern Bengaluru’s residential zones and its IT employment centres. Given its structural importance and usage intensity, periodic maintenance is required to ensure safety and operational stability where rail and road networks intersect.
Authorities have stated that the timing of the works has been structured to minimise commuter inconvenience, with phased closures designed to avoid peak-hour disruptions wherever possible. However, traffic movement is expected to shift significantly to alternative corridors during peak morning and evening travel hours, particularly between Whitefield, ITPL and KR Puram.
Traffic police and railway engineering teams are jointly managing on-ground movement and diversion signage across affected junctions to regulate vehicle flow and prevent bottlenecks. The works form part of a broader infrastructure maintenance programme across Bengaluru’s railway underbridges, where ageing structures and high traffic loads necessitate periodic reinforcement and safety upgrades.
While the restrictions are temporary, the corridor is expected to experience intermittent congestion until the completion of the scheduled works, after which normal traffic movement is expected to resume across the underbridge section.
