The Chief Minister of Assam,Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, held discussions with Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi to review a wide range of railway expansion and infrastructure development proposals aimed at improving connectivity and operational efficiency across the state.
The meeting brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Railways and the Assam government to assess the progress of ongoing projects and identify priority areas for future investment. The discussions centred on strengthening rail infrastructure across Assam, with particular focus on improving regional connectivity and enhancing integration with adjoining states.
A key focus area during the review was capacity augmentation across existing railway corridors in Assam. This included discussions on improving line capacity, enhancing operational efficiency and addressing bottlenecks on heavily used routes to support growing passenger and freight demand in the region.
Passenger amenities at railway stations were also reviewed in detail, with emphasis on modernisation initiatives aimed at improving facilities for commuters. These include station upgrades, better accessibility features, improved waiting areas and enhanced passenger information systems, as part of broader efforts to improve service standards across the network.
The discussions further covered the status of ongoing railway infrastructure projects in the state, with both sides reviewing implementation timelines and execution challenges in certain sections. Officials highlighted the importance of ensuring timely completion of sanctioned works to maximise the benefits of improved connectivity.
Connectivity enhancement to remote and semi-urban regions within Assam formed another key aspect of the deliberations. The proposed interventions aim to link underserved areas with major urban centres such as Guwahati, thereby improving accessibility and supporting regional economic activity.
The meeting also underlined the strategic importance of railway expansion in strengthening logistics networks and enabling more efficient movement of goods and passengers across the North-Eastern region. Improved rail connectivity is expected to play a significant role in supporting industrial growth, trade and tourism in the state.
Both the state government and the Ministry of Railways reiterated their commitment to closer coordination for faster execution of infrastructure projects. The engagement reflects ongoing efforts to accelerate railway development in Assam through structured planning, regular review mechanisms and inter-agency collaboration.
