Gandhigram railway station in Ahmedabad has commenced its first long-distance express train service, with Indian Railways introducing a new connectivity link between the city’s western suburban rail network and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. The development marks a significant operational expansion for the station, which has primarily functioned as a suburban and regional boarding point within the Ahmedabad railway division.
The new service has been introduced by Western Railway as a special train operation connecting Gandhigram with Prayagraj, providing direct long-distance rail access from this station for the first time. The introduction of the service is expected to offer improved convenience for passengers residing in western Ahmedabad and nearby residential localities, who earlier relied on larger terminal stations such as Ahmedabad Junction for similar long-distance travel.
The decision to initiate express train operations from Gandhigram forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to decentralise passenger boarding facilities and reduce congestion at major railway hubs. By enabling additional origin points for long-distance trains, the rail network aims to distribute passenger load more evenly across the city’s station infrastructure.
The Gandhigram–Prayagraj service is expected to cater to both regular travellers and seasonal passenger demand, particularly on routes connecting Gujarat with northern pilgrimage and economic centres. Prayagraj, being a significant religious and administrative destination, typically witnesses higher travel demand during key festival and peak travel periods, further reinforcing the relevance of direct connectivity from Ahmedabad.
Railway officials have indicated that the introduction of this service also reflects incremental upgrades in operational planning within the Western Railway zone, where select suburban stations are being evaluated for enhanced long-distance connectivity based on demand patterns and infrastructure readiness.
Gandhigram station, located in a densely populated part of Ahmedabad, has traditionally served commuter traffic within the city’s suburban rail network. The commencement of express train operations from this station represents a functional shift, enabling it to handle longer-distance passenger services alongside its existing role.
The service is also expected to improve first- and last-mile travel efficiency for passengers in surrounding areas, reducing the need to travel to central terminals and thereby easing pressure on road and rail connectivity leading to Ahmedabad Junction.
With this addition, Indian Railways continues its broader approach of expanding origin-destination flexibility across urban rail networks, allowing select stations to function as alternative boarding points for long-distance routes. The development is expected to gradually enhance passenger distribution across Ahmedabad’s railway infrastructure while improving overall accessibility for suburban catchments.
