Pune's metro expansion plans have received fresh proposals from corporators seeking better connectivity across emerging residential and industrial areas. Suggestions include extending the Vanaz Chandni Chowk line to Pirangut, developing a new Katraj Dehu Road corridor, and expanding the Yerawada route towards Vishrantwadi, Alandi Road and Lohegaon airport. These proposals were placed before the civic committee for review. The move builds on ongoing and previously approved metro expansions, reflecting growing demand for improved public transport in fast-developing peripheral areas of the city.
Corporators in Pune have put forward multiple proposals to expand the metro rail network, aiming to improve connectivity in areas witnessing rapid urban growth. The proposals were discussed at the City Improvement Committee meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation and are expected to be reviewed further before any approvals are taken.
One of the key suggestions is to extend the existing VanazChandni Chowk metro corridor up to Pirangut. The proposal noted that development activity has already moved beyond Chandni Chowk towards Pirangut, with increasing residential and industrial presence. Members pointed out that planning connectivity in advance would help manage future traffic pressure. It was also indicated that the proposed stretch includes a ghat section, which may require detailed technical studies, though similar terrain has been handled in other metro projects.
Another major proposal involves creating a new metro corridor between Katraj and Dehu Road along the bypass. This route is expected to connect several important localities such as Warje, Bavdhan, Baner, Balewadi, Wakad and Punawale. While parts of this stretch are currently served by existing or under-construction metro lines, a continuous corridor up to Dehu Road has not been planned so far. The proposal aims to create a direct link across these high-density residential and commercial zones, where traffic congestion has been increasing steadily.
In the eastern part of Pune, corporators suggested extending the metro line from Yerawada towards Vishrantwadi, Alandi Road and further to Lohegaon airport. The demand for this route has been linked to growing population density and traffic movement in these areas. Alandi, being an important religious destination along with emerging residential development, has seen repeated demands for better connectivity in the past. The proposed airport link is also seen as a practical addition, considering the rising passenger traffic at Lohegaon.
The proposals will now be examined by the civic administration and may be placed before the general body after initial review. This comes alongside earlier approvals, including the extension from Katraj to Khed Shivapur, which indicates a broader push to take metro connectivity beyond the core city limits.
Pune Metro has been expanding in phases, with key corridors already operational and several others under development. Recent approvals by the central government for additional stretches have further strengthened the citys long-term public transport roadmap. The current proposals from corporators add to this pipeline, focusing on last-mile connectivity and linking newly developing zones that are currently dependent on road transport.
