HBL Engineering Limited has secured an INR 800.36 crore contract from Banaras Locomotive Works to supply, install and commission onboard Kavach 4.0 systems for Indian Railways. The indigenous automatic train protection technology is designed to improve rail safety by preventing overspeeding, signal violations and collisions. The project will be executed over 12 months and forms part of Indian Railways broader push to upgrade safety infrastructure across its network. This order strengthens HBL's growing presence in railway safety systems, driven by rising demand for Kavach deployment as the sector focuses on modernisation, automation and improved operational reliability.
HBL Engineering Limited has secured a contract worth INR 800.36 crore from Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, for the supply, testing and commissioning of onboard Kavach equipment for Indian Railways, with the order awarded in the past week as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen rail safety infrastructure across the network.
The contract pertains to the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0, an indigenous automatic train protection system designed to enhance operational safety by preventing incidents such as signal passing at danger, overspeeding, and potential collisions. The system forms a key component of Indian Railways broader programme to upgrade safety mechanisms across its rolling stock and track infrastructure.
According to the company's regulatory disclosures, the scope of work includes supplying the equipment and carrying out installation, testing, and commissioning across designated locomotives. The contract, classified as a domestic order, is expected to be executed within a period of approximately 12 months.
Banaras Locomotive Works, which operates as one of Indian Railways principal locomotive manufacturing units, is responsible for producing electric locomotives deployed across the national network. The award of this contract aligns with the unit's ongoing efforts to integrate advanced safety technologies into new and existing locomotive fleets.
HBL Engineering, formerly known as HBL Power Systems Limited, has been expanding its presence in the railway electronics and safety systems segment, particularly in Kavach-related deployments. The company has secured multiple contracts in recent months, including orders from other railway production units such as the Integral Coach Factory, reflecting increasing institutional demand for onboard safety systems.
The transaction does not involve any related-party arrangements, and the company has clarified that its promoters or associated entities do not hold any interest in the awarding authority.
Kavach is being implemented as part of a phased rollout across the Indian Railways network, covering key high-density routes and expanding to additional sections over time. The system is intended to support the modernisation of railway operations through automation and enhanced signalling integration, with a focus on reducing human error and improving safety outcomes.
The order contributes to HBL Engineering's existing order book in the railway segment, where projects typically involve supply, installation, and long-term integration of signalling and protection systems. As Indian Railways continues to prioritise safety upgrades and capacity expansion, contracts related to Kavach deployment remain a significant component of infrastructure-related expenditure within the sector.
