Oberoi Group to open luxury resort at Makaibari Tea Estate in Darjeeling

EIH Ltd of The Oberoi Group has signed a management agreement to develop a 25-room luxury Oberoi resort at the historic Makaibari Tea Estate in Darjeeling. Scheduled to open in 2030, the project will strengthen the group's presence in heritage and nature-driven destinations. Established in 1859, Makaibari is among the world's oldest tea estates and is known for its Himalayan views, rich biodiversity and sustainable tea practices. The resort will be designed to blend luxury with the estate's ecological and cultural character. The project is also expected to support local employment and skill development, aligning with EIH's wider expansion plans of adding new luxury properties by 2030.Read more

HC Judgement: Court orders Darjeeling Municipality to halt unauthorized construction on Mall Road

The Calcutta High Court has directed Darjeeling municipality to prohibit unauthorized construction on Mall Road while hearing a case against alleged illegal development. The municipality defended its actions, stating that the current work is part of a Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA)-funded beautification project, including road expansion and hawker relocation. However, the petitioner presented an RTI response suggesting GTA was constructing a structure near Sunflower Hotel. GTA leases out Sandakphu-Phalat tourism properties to boost revenue

Darjeeling's Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has leased out nine tourism properties in the Sandakphu-Phalat area to private parties due to their failure to generate sufficient revenue. These properties, mostly lodges and trekking huts along the Himalayan trail, were found to be in need of repairs estimated at Rs 6.72 crore. Sandakphu, the highest point in Bengal at 12,000 feet, is renowned for its trekking trail. The leasing decision has sparked controversy, with some alleging favouritism in property selection.
