The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is managing a vast portfolio of national highway construction across India, with 1,240 projects spanning over 29,000 km currently under development. Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha that these works, with a total cost of INR 7.80 lakh crore, are being executed in stages and are expected to conclude by the financial year 2028-29. The Maharashtra Cabinet recently approved construction of a roughly 105 km freight corridor connecting the upcoming Vadhavan port in Palghar with the Samruddhi Expressway in Nashik. The route will slash the current 183 km detour and cut transit time from around five hours to just one to one and a half hours, enhancing cargo logistics between coastal and inland regions. The move includes a INR 1,500 crore HUDCO loan and state allocation of INR 2,529 crore. The Supreme Court has ruled that all construction projects involving industrial sheds, educational institutions, and hostels must obtain environmental clearance from State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities (SEIAAs). This overturns earlier provisions that exempted such developments from scrutiny. While upholding revised central norms, the bench-led by Chief Justice B R Gavai-also clarified that states have jurisdiction over clearances in eco-sensitive zones, wildlife areas, polluted zones, and near inter-state borders.
