Bhopal's Raja Bhoj Airport to be completed by 2047 in three phases

Synopsis

The Airport Authority of India has finalised Bhopal airport's master plan, set to be implemented in three stages: Phase 1, Phase 2, and Ultimate Capacity by 2047. To reach ultimate capacity, the runway will extend to 4000 metres, requiring 65 acres of additional land, pending state government approval. This expansion is crucial for future air traffic growth. Phase 1 will enhance existing infrastructure, including terminal expansion and new parking areas. Phase 2 will add taxiways, aprons, and hangars. The final phase will fully extend the runway, allowing larger aircraft and new routes. This promises economic benefits and improved passenger experiences.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has finalised an ambitious masterplan for Bhopal airport aimed at supporting future growth and streamlining development. This plan will be implemented in three phases, with the goal of reaching full capacity by 2047. To achieve this ultimate capacity, the runway is set to be extended to 4000 metres, requiring the acquisition of approximately 65 acres of additional land. The AAI has already requested for approval from the state government for this land acquisition. The extension is considered crucial for accommodating the projected increase in air traffic and ensuring the airport can meet future demands.

Airport director Ramjee Awasthi stated that the masterplan had been carefully crafted to address the long-term needs of Bhopal airport. He mentioned that it takes into account the expected rise in passenger and cargo traffic, as well as the need for improved infrastructure and facilities. Awasthi explained that the three-phase approach allows for a systematic and efficient implementation of development projects.

In Phase 1, the focus will be on enhancing existing infrastructure and facilities to meet the immediate needs of the airport. This phase may include the expansion of the terminal building, the construction of new parking areas, and upgrades to air traffic control systems. These improvements are intended to streamline operations and provide a better experience for passengers.

Phase 2 will involve more significant changes to the airport's layout and infrastructure. This phase may see the construction of new taxiways, aprons, and hangars to accommodate the growing number of aircraft. The terminal building might also be further expanded to handle increased passenger traffic. These developments are expected to position Bhopal airport as a key regional hub.

The Ultimate Capacity phase, scheduled to be achieved by 2047, will see the airport reaching its full potential. The extension of the runway to 4000 metres is a critical component of this phase. A longer runway will allow larger aircraft to operate from the airport, opening up new routes and destinations. It will also enable the airport to handle more flights, both domestic and international.

The expansion of the airport is expected to bring economic benefits such as increased tourism and trade. Awasthi emphasised the importance of ensuring that the development is sustainable and does not adversely affect the environment or the lives of nearby residents. The finalisation of the masterplan for 2047 is viewed as a significant milestone in the development of Bhopal airport. The three-phase approach, ending in the extension of the runway to 4000 metres, is expected to enable the airport to meet the growing demands of air traffic in the region.

The Airport Authority of India's comprehensive master plan for Bhopal airport marks a significant step towards accommodating future air traffic demands and supporting regional growth. By extending the runway and upgrading infrastructure in a phased approach, the plan aims to transform the airport into a key regional hub by 2047. The expansion is expected to bring substantial economic benefits, including increased tourism and trade, while also prioritising sustainability and minimal environmental impact. The finalisation of this plan represents a crucial milestone in Bhopal airport's development, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of passengers and the aviation industry.
