RLDA's redevelopment project to modernise Nagpur Railway Station by 2025

Synopsis

The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) is redeveloping Nagpur Railway Station in Maharashtra to transform it into a modern transportation hub capable of accommodating up to 98,000 passengers daily. The project includes creating dedicated arrival and departure areas, connecting platforms via separate foot over bridges, and constructing a spacious 108-meter-wide concourse with amenities and retail options. The west side will feature a multi-level plaza with a 3,420 sqm parking area, while the east side will have separate arrival and departure buildings with a 13,250 sqm unified basement for parking. The project is 33% complete and aims to preserve the station's heritage while modernizing its functionality. Completion is expected by December 2025.

The redevelopment of Nagpur Railway Station in Maharashtra, undertaken by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), aims to transform the station into a modern and efficient transportation hub, designed to handle a significant increase in passenger traffic.

The redeveloped station will be able to accommodate up to 98,000 passengers daily, a substantial increase from its current capacity. To ensure a smooth flow of people, dedicated arrival and departure areas will be created. Separate foot over bridges (FOBs) will connect platforms with these areas, while a spacious 108-meter-wide concourse with a roof plaza will house passenger amenities and retail options on a total area of 11,664 sqm (approximately 125,000 sq ft).

The west side of the station will feature a multi-level arrival and departure plaza (G+2) offering a dedicated parking area of 3,420 sqm (approximately 37,000 sq ft) with drop-off and pick-up facilities. The east side will have separate arrival (G+5) and departure buildings (G+2) with a unified basement of approximately 13,250 sqm (approximately 142,000 sq ft). This design ensures smooth traffic flow with both basement and surface parking on both sides of the station.

Construction is well underway on both the east and west sides of the station. On the east side, the arrival building (G+5) is already under construction and has reached the third floor. The west side is seeing the development of a new railway administration building (G+7).

The project is being executed in phases to minimize disruption to train operations and passenger movement (estimated at 33% completion overall). A phased approach for basement construction on the west side (50% completed as of August 2024) ensures continued access for passengers. Additionally, the relocation of the booking counter will occur only after a new staircase connection is established for easy access to the South FOB on Platform 8.

The redevelopment project is being carried out on a "brownfield" site, meaning it utilizes the existing railway station (built in 1924) while preserving its heritage building. This approach allows for a blend of modern functionality with the station's historical significance.

The Nagpur railway station redevelopment is expected to be completed by December 2025. The RLDA is actively redeveloping 15 other railway stations across India, including major hubs like New Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. These projects aim to improve the overall railway passenger experience across the country, with a focus on increased capacity, improved passenger flow, and modern amenities.
