Mizoram's Power and Electricity Minister, Rodingliana, recently introduced a new initiative under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY), aimed at helping households reduce their electricity costs by installing rooftop solar systems. The scheme is part of a nationwide effort to support one crore households with subsidies for domestic solar power generation. Available exclusively to Indian citizens with good payment records, the initiative targets private residential properties. Financial support is provided by various national and local banks, with installation costs varying by location. As of now, over 2,900 households have registered, with several applications already approved.
Earlier this week, Rodingliana, the Power and Electricity Minister of Mizoram, unveiled a new initiative under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) that allows households to install rooftop solar systems. The programme aims to help residents reduce their electricity costs.
At a press conference in Aizawl, Rodingliana explained how the Centre has been providing subsidies for rooftop solar installations, enabling domestic power generation through solar energy. The scheme is targeting one crore households across the country, with the central government offering subsidised solar systems. Rodingliana added that the initiative is designed to reduce electricity expenses while promoting energy self-sufficiency. The programme also aims to decrease dependence on external power sources and encourage sustainable energy practices among the public.
He clarified that the scheme is available only to Indian citizens who are current electricity consumers with good payment histories. It applies exclusively to private residential properties, excluding government and institutional buildings. Applicants must ensure their details align with their electricity bill information. The minister also mentioned that Mizoram has partnered with 12 authorised vendors for rooftop solar installations, collaborating with the state government. Financial assistance is available through various national banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI) and Mizoram Rural Bank (MRB).
Installation costs are set at INR 12,000 within Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits and INR 18,000 for areas located 200 km beyond the AMC. Currently, 2,990 households have registered for the programme, with 557 applications already approved. For solar systems up to 10 kilowatts, consumers are required to first register on the state portal at pmsuryaghar.mizoram.gov.in, followed by registration on pmsuryaghar.gov.in. After online approval, applicants can choose from government-approved vendors who will handle the installation and provide five years of maintenance services.
The Mizoram government's initiative under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) is a promising step towards reducing electricity costs for residents and promoting energy self-sufficiency through solar power. By offering subsidies for rooftop solar systems, the scheme aims to ease the financial burden on consumers while encouraging sustainable energy use. With support from various financial institutions and authorised vendors, the programme is making solar energy more accessible to households, especially in Mizoram, where thousands have already registered for the installation. This initiative highlights the state's commitment to reducing dependency on external power sources and supporting renewable energy.
