Last week, the state government announced an extension of its tenant verification drive for an additional five days before starting house visits to identify individuals living in Goa without proper tenant documentation. The initiative, which began on October 1, was originally set to conclude on October 10. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasized the importance of tenant verification, noting that migrants have been involved in some cases of rape and murder.

The main goal of this drive is to act as a precautionary measure, allowing the Goa police to monitor potential criminal activities. By verifying the credentials of tenants throughout the state, authorities aim to enhance the safety and security of both residents and visitors in Goa. The Chief Minister stated that following the passage of the Tenant Verification Bill in the assembly, the Goa police launched a significant tenant verification initiative. He noted that October 10 was the final day for this verification process, urging those who have not yet completed it to do so promptly and willingly. He warned that individuals found by the police to have not completed their tenant verification will face fines.

The Chief Minister stated that the police would assist in the tenant verification process over the next five days and addressed rumors claiming that the police were demanding INR 200 to complete the verification. He emphasized that landlords who rent out their properties should submit the necessary documents for their tenants to finalize the tenant verification. He noted that the initiative is intended to benefit both the landlords and the tenants residing in those properties.

He pointed out that there have been reports of individuals staying in rented properties committing theft and, at times, being involved in murder. He noted that crimes such as murder and rape have been committed by those living in rental accommodations, which is why precautionary measures have been put in place.

Additionally, he explained that the Goa Verification of Tenants Act applies to individuals residing on rent or under other agreements. He emphasized that the act aims to enhance citizens' security, prevent breaches of peace, and maintain public order. He stated that it strengthens the processes for collecting and verifying tenant information to ensure timely access to crucial information related to security concerns and other issues.
