The Social Impact Assessment (SIA) for the proposed Sabarimala Greenfield Airport project has reached a key milestone, with a survey on the social effects of land acquisition in Manimala and Erumely panchayats completed. Conducted by a 15-member team from Bharat Mata College since October 9, this assessment follows the cancellation of a previous report by the Centre for Management Development due to a court order. Approximately 1,039.876 hectares of land, impacting 221 families in the Cheruvelli estate and 362 families outside it, are set for acquisition. A public hearing will allow affected families to voice their concerns, with feedback incorporated into the final report. The project aims to enhance connectivity and boost tourism in Kottayam, creating economic opportunities while emphasising the need for fair compensation and community engagement.
The Social Impact Assessment (SIA) for the proposed Sabarimala Greenfield Airport project has reached an important milestone. A survey to evaluate the social effects of land acquisition in Manimala and Erumely panchayats has been completed. The draft report is expected to be submitted to the district collector by November 15.
This assessment was carried out by a 15-member team from the social work department of Bharat Mata College, Thirkkakkara, beginning on October 9. The agency took over the task after the previous report by the Centre for Management Development was cancelled due to a court order. About 1,039.876 hectares of land across the villages of Manimala and Erumeli Thekku are slated for acquisition. This includes 916.27 hectares located in Cheruvelli estate and 121.876 hectares of private land.
The construction of the airport will have a direct impact on the local community. It will affect 221 families within the Cheruvelli estate and 362 families outside of it, totaling approximately 1,441 residents. Moreover, around 875 plantation workers will also be impacted. The survey team made efforts to engage with these families during their assessment, ensuring that their voices are heard in the process. Following the completion of the draft report, there will be a public hearing, or "adalat," for the affected families. This forum will provide them with an opportunity to share their concerns and suggestions regarding the project. Feedback from the community will be incorporated into the final report, which will also undergo review by an expert committee before it is submitted to the government.
In addition to addressing community concerns, the Sabarimala airport project is intended to enhance connectivity and boost tourism in the region. It could play a vital role in supporting economic growth, particularly for local businesses. The decision to establish a Greenfield airport is seen as a potential boon for Kottayam, encouraging job creation and improving accessibility to one of Kerala's key pilgrimage sites. However, while development brings opportunities, it also presents challenges. Stakeholders emphasise the importance of balancing progress with the needs and rights of local communities. The upcoming public forum will be crucial in ensuring that the interests of affected families are taken into account.
Community leaders have expressed the hope that the government will prioritise fair compensation for those losing land and livelihoods. As the situation develops, residents of Kottayam remain engaged and hopeful for a transparent process as they navigate the complexities of this significant project. Local authorities anticipate that the final report will lead to constructive dialogue and outcomes that benefit both the local communities and the overall region.
The Sabarimala Greenfield aAirport is more than just an infrastructure project; it symbolises a pivotal moment for Kottayam's future and its residents. The outcome of this assessment will set the tone for how development initiatives can align with social responsibility.
