Under the leadership of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde and the guidance of Dr. Rahul Gethe, the Encroachment Department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently took decisive action against unauthorized huts in Nerul. The operation aimed to clear illegal encroachments in front of the NMMC water lifting station near Bhagwan Baba Garden in Sector 9, Nerul East. These huts, which were set up on the footpath, had become a hub for illegal activities, raising concerns about public safety.
The presence of the unauthorized huts not only disturbed the peace but also caused inconvenience to pedestrians, especially women, who found it difficult to pass through the area at night. Around 20 to 25 people were regularly sleeping on the footpath, further contributing to the disruption. The issue gained attention through local media reports, prompting swift action from the authorities.
On September 19, 2024, the Encroachment Department of the "B" Division, Nerul, carried out the demolition of the huts. During the operation, several items were confiscated, including five bags, six water jars, bundles of clothes, stone stoves, tarpaulins, and furniture such as tables, sofas, and beds. In addition, plywood boards, bamboo sticks, plastic chairs, and other materials were seized. These items were later deposited at the Koparkhairane dumping ground.
The operation was conducted with the help of 12 labourers, two pickups, one dumper, and a team of security personnel. Local police from the Nerul division also assisted in ensuring the smooth execution of the encroachment removal. The coordinated effort was successful in clearing the area and restoring order.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's Encroachment Department has been ramping up its actions. Last week it took action against unauthorized banners across all 8 divisions of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. On 18th and 19th September, a total of 2516 banners (1893 small and 623 large) were removed and 22 printing businesses involved in printing advertisement banners were given written instructions to refrain from printing any advertisement/banners/posters without permission from the Municipal Division Office. Violation will result in action under Section 3 of the Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1995.
The NMMC has reiterated its commitment to continuing such operations in the future to prevent illegal encroachments and ensure public safety. By taking strong measures against unauthorized constructions, the corporation aims to maintain law and order and protect the rights of ordinary citizens.
