Mumbai's first double-decker flyover inaugurated

On August 28, 2024, Mumbai Metropolitan Region's first double-decker flyover was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde in Mira-Bhayander. This pioneering project, combining a Metro viaduct with a flyover on Metro Line-9, aims to significantly improve commuting in the area. Spanning one kilometre and positioned 5.5 metres above road level, the flyover will alleviate traffic congestion, reducing travel time by 8-10 minutes. Despite challenges like relocating a major power line, the project was completed in just two years, integrating advanced technology and efficient planning to meet Mumbai's growing transportation needs.

August 28, 2024, a significant milestone in urban development was achieved with the inauguration of Mumbai Metropolitan Region's first double-decker flyover. Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde presided over the inauguration ceremony held in Mira-Bhayander. This project uniquely combines a double-decker Metro viaduct with a flyover on Metro Line-9. The event was attended by local MLAs Shri Pratap Sarnaik, Shri Geeta Jain, and Joint Metropolitan Commissioner Shri Radhabinod Sharma. The new infrastructure is expected to greatly improve daily commuting for residents in the Mira-Bhayander area.

The double-decker flyover is approximately one kilometre long and sits 5.5 metres above the current road level. It will alleviate traffic congestion, especially at critical junctions such as Pleasant Park, Hatkesh, and Silver Park. Built to handle heavy traffic, including multi-axle vehicles, the flyover adheres to the IRC: 7-2017 and Indian Railway Standards: 2014. Additionally, the structure has been equipped with proper signage, lighting, and other essential features, achieving a distinct look inspired by the Metro Red Line. The flyover is anticipated to shorten travel times by 8 to 10 minutes, leading to reduced fuel costs and improved traffic flow. Furthermore, it will help lower greenhouse gas emissions by minimising vehicle idling.

However, constructing the double-decker flyover was not without challenges. The project required the relocation of roughly 3 kilometres of the main double-circuit Dahanu-Versova power generation line. This power line was raised to 75 metres above ground level, making it the second-tallest of its kind in Maharashtra. Advanced technology played a key role in completing the project within just two years. I-girder precast elements were used to streamline construction. The U-girder installation was done during the day to avoid disrupting traffic, utilising a 'Tyre Straddle Carrier' method that allowed vehicles to pass safely underneath.

The double-decker flyover brings multiple advantages, including efficient land use by integrating road and Metro infrastructure into one system. This integration is expected to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate easy transitions between different modes of transport. The design not only enhances the aesthetics of the area but also allows for future expansions. Moreover, it minimises environmental impact, which is vital for managing growing urban demands.

With its opening, the double-decker flyover is set to redefine urban land use in the region, tackling traffic issues and providing a faster travel experience for commuters. Chief Minister Shinde emphasised the project's significance, stating, "This new flyover is a major milestone not just for Mumbai, but for all of Maharashtra. It addresses traffic concerns and saves time and fuel for everyday commuters." He attributed the project's success to modern technology and effective planning, which will foster further development within the Mumbai metropolitan area.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, added, "The Double-Decker Flyover project is part of MMRDA's new vision. Given the space constraints in Mumbai and its suburbs, this flyover was designed to integrate with metro pillars. Now, you will see the metro operating on the upper level while vehicles commute on the flyover below, with road-level traffic flowing smoothly. This project provides a modern solution to meet Mumbai's transportation needs, reducing traffic congestion and offering commuters a faster, safer, and more convenient travel experience. It will be crucial for Mumbai's growing needs and future urban development."

Additionally, the Metro Line-9, along with its flyover, has received notable recognition. It was awarded the World Safety Organization's Excellence Award in Workspace Occupational Health and Safety in 2024, along with the prestigious CIDC Vishwakarma Award for the Metro Line-9 and its flyovers.

This double-decker flyover not only highlights modern engineering but also reflects Mumbai's commitment to overcoming urban challenges through innovative solutions. As the city continues to grow, this infrastructure will serve as a crucial component in enhancing connectivity and ensuring a better quality of life for its residents.
