The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has approved 104 flats in Narela for families displaced from slums to facilitate the construction of a maternal and child care hospital by RML Hospital. These EWS flats, located in Pocket V, Sector G-7, provide improved living conditions and access to essential amenities. The allocation, approved by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, follows a camp for residents to receive allotment letters. This move is part of broader DDA efforts, including past and ongoing projects like the Kalkaji and Jailorwala Bagh schemes, aimed at better housing for economically disadvantaged families.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has approved the allocation of 104 flats in Narela for residents living in jhuggis (slums) on land owned by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). This decision will provide much-needed housing to families displaced from their previous settlements to make way for the construction of a maternal and child care hospital by the RML Hospital.
The DDA's official statement highlights that the CPWD land was previously encroached upon by jhuggi dwellers. To support these residents, RML Hospital, in coordination with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), reached out to the DDA for assistance in relocating these families. It was decided that the families would be offered EWS flats located in Pocket V, Sector G-7, Narela, enabling them to access better living conditions.
To facilitate this transition, affected families were instructed to fill out eligibility forms for the allotment of the flats. Following this, the DDA and RML Hospital organised a camp where residents could collect their allotment letters, marking a significant step towards their rehousing. This initiative received formal approval during a DDA meeting led by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
The transition to these new flats not only aids in advancing the construction of the hospital but also promises to improve the standard of living for many families. The DDA stated that the newly allocated flats are well-maintained and equipped with two rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet, and a balcony. Furthermore, the location offers access to essential civic amenities and public transportation, ensuring residents can integrate into their new community effectively.
The DDA has a history of implementing initiatives to rehabilitate slum dwellers within the city. Previously, the authority launched the "Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makan" scheme, which focuses on providing in-situ rehabilitation for the homeless. In November 2022, 3,024 newly constructed EWS flats were allocated in Kalkaji to assist slum residents, demonstrating the ongoing efforts by the DDA to address housing challenges.
Currently, the DDA is also executing a second rehabilitation project at Jailorwala Bagh, where 1,675 flats are under construction, and is working on further developments in the Kathputli Colony area, which aims to provide 2,800 flats in tall residential towers. These combined efforts illustrate the DDA's commitment to facilitating better housing options for the economically disadvantaged in Delhi.
