Bengaluru's Anjanapura BDA layout residents oppose slum relocation plan

Synopsis

Residents of Anjanapura BDA Layout are voicing strong concerns over a plan to relocate slum dwellers from Kengeri and Shankarpally to their neighborhood. Developed by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) 25 years ago, Anjanapura still faces basic infrastructure challenges, including a lack of reliable water supply, forcing residents to depend on tankers. The decision by the Karnataka Slum Development Board to move slum dwellers to Anjanapura instead of the originally planned locations has alarmed residents. They fear this could lead to increased crime and further strain on the already inadequate infrastructure. The Anjanapura Residents Welfare Association has formally expressed their concerns to the Deputy Commissioner, emphasizing the potential risks to water resources and the lack of essential civic amenities in the area.

Residents of Anjanapura BDA Layout are raising significant concerns over a proposed plan to relocate slum dwellers to their neighbourhood. Anjanapura, a layout developed by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) 25 years ago, continues to struggle with basic infrastructure issues. One of the major problems is the lack of a reliable water supply, forcing residents to rely on water tankers for their daily needs since piped water is still unavailable.

The situation took a turn when the Karnataka Slum Development Board decided to relocate slum dwellers from Kengeri and Shankarpally to Anjanapura, rather than the initially planned locations of Uttarahalli and Gollahalli. Due to strong opposition from the residents of Gollahalli, the relocation site was shifted to Kembathalli Village near NICE Road.

However, this decision has sparked strong opposition from Anjanapura residents. Many feel that bringing slum dwellers into the area could lead to increased crime and further strain on the already inadequate infrastructure. The Anjanapura Further Extension 9th, 10th, and 11th Block Residents Welfare Association recently sent a letter to KA Dayanananda, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bengaluru Urban, outlining their worries.

The letter emphasised that the proposed slum is planned in the middle of Anjanapura's 10th and 11th blocks, close to a Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board water tank. The residents fear that this proximity could lead to the contamination of their water resources, potentially causing a severe impact on the peace and security of the area.

Residents have also highlighted the lack of civic facilities in the layout, pointing out that BDA has not yet provided essential amenities like schools, gardens, or playgrounds for children. The absence of tap water remains a critical issue, and the relocation plan has only added to the panic among residents.
