The Wellbeing Start-up programme, launched by the Housing Authority, is set to run from October this year to April next year. The initiative is designed to support young entrepreneurs by offering them an opportunity to set up shop in one of ten rent-free premises within the authority's shopping centres. These shop spaces will be provided without any rental fees, allowing participants to focus on building their businesses without the burden of initial overhead costs. The authority will also offer basic support for setting up the shops, including assistance with shop construction and marketing efforts.

A key feature of the programme is the profit-sharing model. While the shops will not be charged rent, they will be reviewed regularly, and if they start generating a profit, the Housing Authority will take a 20% share of the net profit. This money will be reinvested into the programme to support its development and help future participants. The aim is to create a sustainable model that supports new businesses and the ongoing growth of the programme.

Winnie Ho, the secretary and chairman of the Housing Authority, explained that the programme aims to harness the innovative ideas of young people and offer a more varied shopping experience to the community. Ho stated that the Wellbeing Start-Up programme genuinely helps young people kick-start their entrepreneurial dreams by offering rent-free, well-managed shops that have stable foot traffic. The programme not only offers a financial reprieve but also places businesses in locations with guaranteed foot traffic, providing a stable platform for these start-ups to thrive.

The application process for the programme will begin on 1st August and will close on 31st August. Interested participants are encouraged to submit their business proposals within this period. The authority will assess the proposals based on several criteria, including innovation, feasibility, market potential, social benefits, financial arrangements, and team management capabilities. This thorough evaluation process ensures that the selected businesses have the potential to succeed and contribute positively to the community. Successful applicants will then be allocated suitable shop premises to set up their businesses.

In addition to the Wellbeing Start-up programme, Hong Kong has recently launched an e-commerce festival aimed at boosting online shopping and retail sales. This initiative is part of a broader effort to stimulate economic growth and support the retail sector, especially in light of the challenges posed by recent global events. The e-commerce festival offers various promotions and discounts, encouraging consumers to engage in online shopping and support local businesses. Both the Wellbeing Start-up programme and the e-commerce festival reflect Hong Kong's commitment to fostering a vibrant economic environment. These initiatives provide platforms for new and existing businesses to grow, innovate, and contribute to the economy.

The Wellbeing Start-up programme, in particular, offers young entrepreneurs a unique opportunity to test their business ideas in a real-world setting with minimal financial risk. By providing essential resources and support, the Housing Authority hopes to nurture a new generation of entrepreneurs and stimulate local economic development. These efforts are crucial in ensuring that Hong Kong remains a hub of innovation and commercial activity.
