NMMC undertakes emergency rescue operation at Shahabaz village building collapse

On Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 4:45 am, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) received an alert about the collapse of a four-story building, Indira Niwas, located in Shahabaz Village, Sector 19, Belapur. The Central Disaster Management Control Room was notified, prompting an immediate response.

The NMMC fire brigade arrived at the scene by 5:00 am and quickly initiated rescue operations. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, along with Deputy Commissioner of Emergency Management Mr. Sharad Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Violation Division Dr. Rahul Gethe, and Assistant Commissioner of Belapur Division Mr. Shashikant Tandel, were on-site to oversee the operation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also summoned to assist in the rescue efforts.

Upon arrival, the rescue teams, supported by the police, began a search operation. Initial reports indicated that up to five people might be trapped under the debris. During the rescue, two individuals, Lalluddin Nazir Pathan (23 years old) and Rukhsar Laluddin Pathan (19 years old), were successfully pulled from the rubble and transported to the Municipal General Hospital in Vashi. Both are reported to be in stable condition, with their medical expenses covered by the Municipal Corporation.

Tragically, the bodies of three individuals were recovered during the operation: Mohammad Miraj (29 years old, from Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh), Shafiq Ahmed Ansari (30 years old, from Bhiwandi, Thane), and Miraj Ansari (24 years old, from Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh). They were taken to Municipal General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The search and rescue operation concluded at 3:40 pm.

The Municipal Corporation has arranged for the deceased's bodies to be sent to their native villages and will seek assistance from the Chief Minister's Assistance Fund for the victims' families. The proposal for this aid will be forwarded to the District Magistrate of Thane.

The building, which housed three shops and 17 residential flats, had 39 adults and 16 children who were all reported safe before the collapse. These individuals have been relocated to a temporary shelter center in Agroli, Belapur division, where they are provided with food and accommodation.

The NDRF completed their search and rescue operations, and the debris removal from the site has been finished. The Fire Brigade and Belapur Division Office are continuing with their respective duties.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation acted swiftly in response to this accident. They have issued a warning to residents living in buildings deemed dangerous by the Municipal Corporation to vacate immediately. Electricity and water supplies to such buildings will be suspended. The NMMC urges all citizens to cooperate with these safety measures.
