Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has called for the immediate use of market buildings constructed by the NMMC. Dr. Shinde held a meeting with relevant officials to review the situation and made several fundamental suggestions to bring these market buildings into use.
During his inspection of the fish market at Diwalegaon, Dr. Shinde emphasised the need for cleanliness both inside and around the market. He noted the current use of portable toilets and instructed those permanent toilets be constructed. Additionally, he called for the swift allocation of vegetable and fruit stalls to the appropriate vendors and initiated a cleanliness campaign in the Diwalegaon area, particularly along the bay shore, with active public participation. Dr. Shinde also engaged with local vendors to hear their concerns and suggestions.
In Sanpada, at Plot No. 17, Sector 4, Dr. Shinde inspected the daily market building and suggested restructuring the stalls to a table format to enhance convenience for both vendors and customers. He proposed extending the upper part of the market's roof like a weather shade to allow for better air circulation while maintaining the market's design. He also directed the widespread dissemination of cleanliness messages under the Swachh Bharat Mission and emphasised making all markets plastic-free zones.
At the market in Sector 14, Sanpada, Dr. Shinde instructed the addition of weather sheds outside the market and the arrangement of steps to facilitate easier access from the second entrance. Similarly, at the Vashi Sector 1 market, he proposed extending the roof and adding weather sheds to improve ventilation. He also suggested redesigning the windows and opening another entrance to improve accessibility for citizens. Dr. Shinde spoke with fish sellers to understand their needs and directed prompt improvements to the market's interior.
Dr. Shinde also suggested that all markets should have slopes and tiles in the small gutters to ensure proper internal water flow and prevent water stagnation.
In addition to market inspections, Dr. Shinde reviewed the construction of the NMMT bus terminus and commercial complex at Vashi Sector 9. He directed the installation of benches and emphasised designing the terminus to facilitate easy movement for citizens. He called for the speedy completion of the necessary actions to start using the offices and commercial complexes available for lease.
Dr. Shinde also inspected the monsoon preparedness in the Navi Mumbai area and instructed officials to address any issues noticed during the visit. Key officials, including Additional Commissioner and City Engineer Mr. Shirish Arwad, Deputy Commissioner of Circle 1 Mr. Somnath Potre, Transport Manager Mr. Yogesh Kaduskar, and others, accompanied Dr. Shinde during his inspections.
This initiative by Dr. Shinde highlights the importance of promptly utilising municipal infrastructure for its intended purposes, improving market facilities, and ensuring the cleanliness and accessibility of public spaces in Navi Mumbai.
