1,078 families to receive new flats in DDA's INR 25 lakh housing project

Synopsis

Residents of Jailorwala Bagh are set to receive new flats from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) as part of the "Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makan" scheme. Starting July, 1,078 eligible families will move into 1,675 newly constructed EWS (Economically Weaker Section) flats, each costing INR 25 lakh but subsidized to INR 1.4 lakh for slum dwellers. These 340 sq ft units include a bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, and balcony. The project also features community halls, shops, a childcare center, classrooms, a clinic, and ample green spaces and parking. This marks DDA's second successful in-situ rehabilitation effort.

Jailorwala Bagh residents have a reason to celebrate! The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is on track to hand over possession of new flats to 1,078 eligible families from July onwards. This initiative is part of DDA's "Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makan" scheme, an in-situ rehabilitation project aimed at providing permanent housing to slum residents.

The project encompasses a total of 1,675 EWS (Economically Weaker Section) flats. While each flat was constructed at a cost of INR 25 lakh, eligible slum dwellers will receive them at a significantly subsidized rate of INR 1.4 lakh. These spacious flats, measuring approximately 340 square feet each, offer a significant upgrade from jhuggi living. Each unit features a bedroom, living room, kitchen, separate toilet and bathroom, and a balcony.

The project goes beyond just providing basic housing. The complex boasts a range of modern amenities to enhance the lives of residents. Community halls, shops, an anganwadi (childcare centre) with a capacity of around 25-30 children, classrooms for educational opportunities, a doctor's clinic for basic healthcare needs, and a children's daycare centre are all included. Ample green spaces measuring 9,257.7 square meters provide a refreshing escape within the complex, while dedicated parking facilities can accommodate over 337 vehicles. A basement measuring 11,024 square meters provides additional parking options, with surface parking also available.

This project marks DDA's second successful in-situ rehabilitation initiative. In November 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 3,024 newly built EWS flats in Kalkaji, providing permanent housing to another slum community. These projects aim to improve living conditions for slum dwellers by replacing their jhuggis with safe and secure permanent housing.

DDA's commitment to slum rehabilitation extends beyond Jailorwala Bagh and Kalkaji. Currently, a third project is underway in Kathputli Colony, with plans to construct 2,800 flats, each averaging 37 square meters, for residents who have been residing in the area for nearly 40 years. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena further announced a fourth project in March, encompassing three clusters in East Delhi - Kalandar Colony, Deepak Colony, and Dilshad Vihar Colony. This new in-situ rehabilitation project will utilize over seven hectares of land to develop multi-story buildings, providing improved housing options for hundreds of families. These initiatives demonstrate DDA's ongoing efforts to improve the lives of Delhi's slum dwellers by providing better housing options.
