A technical issue on the Mumbai Western Railway network has led to significant delays in local train services, forcing commuters to turn to the Mumbai Metro for their travel needs. This sudden surge in metro ridership has resulted in unprecedented overcrowding at several stations along Lines 2A and 7, particularly at Borivali, Kurar, and Rashtriya Udyan. The Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority (MMRDA), which operates the metro, has responded by adding extra train services to alleviate the rush. This immediate action aims to provide relief to commuters affected by the disruption on the Western Railway network.
Due to a technical glitch on the Mumbai Western Railway network, local train services have been significantly delayed, leading commuters to turn to the Mumbai Metro for their travel needs. This sudden influx of passengers has resulted in an unprecedented surge in crowding at several Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 stations, particularly at Borivali, Kurar, and Rashtriya Udyan.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority (MMRDA), which operates the metro lines, has acknowledged the issue and has taken immediate action to alleviate the rush. According to an official statement, MMRDA's Metropolitan Commissioner, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, has directed the addition of extra train services on Metro Lines 2A and 7.
Normally, 21 train sets operate during peak hours, but the MMRDA has now increased the total number of train sets in service to 24. This additional service with extra train sets will continue until the situation on the Western Railway network returns to normal.
The technical issue that disrupted the local train services occurred on Monday at the Borivali station, where a cable was cut, rendering some track-changing points non-operational. Thus, trains were not operated from platform numbers 1 and 2. Trains ran normally from the remaining platforms - 3 to 8- at the station.
Borivali is one of the busiest railway stations in north Mumbai, serving a large number of commuters and office-goers daily. The Western Railway operates more than 1,300 suburban services and caters to around 30 lakh commuters across its network, which stretches from Churchgate in south Mumbai to Dahanu in the neighbouring Palghar district.
The MMRDA's prompt response to increase metro services aims to provide relief to the commuters affected by the Western Railway's technical glitch, ensuring a smoother and more efficient travel experience during this disruption.
