Bengaluru civic body targets a property tax collection of Rs 4,500 crore

Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) outlined an extensive tax collection strategy. This approach includes identifying commercial properties via the Bescom database, tax recovery from businesses, strict review of self-assessment affidavits, and sealing non-compliant properties. The efficacy of these measures is evident in the notable increase in tax collections, surpassing the previous fiscal period. The BBMP is optimistic about reaching the targeted Rs 4,500 crore in property tax collections by March, attributing this projection to dedicated efforts and initiatives aimed at addressing tax defaulters and ensuring compliance.

The BBMP, collecting a sum of Rs 3,320 crore in property tax from April 2023 up to the first week of January, exudes confidence in achieving a commendable Rs 4,500 crore by the end of the fiscal year. The corresponding figures for the period spanning April 2022 to January 2023 was nearly Rs 2,749 crore, with the total collections for the previous fiscal standing at Rs 3,155 crore.



BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath attributes this impressive success to a range of strategic measures. These include carefully identifying commercial properties using the Bescom database, actively collecting taxes from commercial establishments, scrutinizing a portion of self-assessment affidavits, and decisively sealing non-compliant commercial properties for tax-related violations. Section 144 of the BBMP Act, 2020, empowers the Palike with the authority to seize both movable and immovable assets and access the bank accounts of tax defaulters.



In the realm of commercial enterprises, the BBMP has the power to cancel trade licenses in cases of non-compliance. For boosting revenue further, the BBMP's revenue department officials diligently crafted a comprehensive list enumerating property tax defaulters. Then from December, the department took a proactive initiative to seal the properties of identified defaulters as a consequence of non-adherence to tax obligations.



This proactive stance and the effective utilization of legal provisions underscore the BBMP's commitment to fiscal diligence and accountability. The execution of targeted measures, such as sealing non-compliant properties, serves as both a deterrent and a corrective action, signaling the authorities' resolve to ensure adherence to tax regulations.
