Beneficiaries of the PMAY in Chandigarh must pay monthly maintenance charges

Synopsis

The beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme in Chandigarh will now have to pay monthly maintenance charges for their homes. The scheme, launched by the government to provide affordable housing to low-income families, has been a success in Chandigarh, but many of these families are now struggling to pay the maintenance charges, which range from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 per month. The decision to charge maintenance fees was taken by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB), which is responsible for the implementation of the PMAY scheme in the city. The beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme in Chandigarh will now have to pay monthly maintenance charges for their homes. The scheme, launched by the government to provide affordable housing to low-income families, has been a success in Chandigarh, with thousands of families receiving new homes under the scheme. However, many of these families are now struggling to pay the maintenance charges, which range from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 per month.

The decision to charge maintenance fees was taken by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB), which is responsible for the implementation of the PMAY scheme in the city. The board has stated that the fees are necessary to cover the costs of maintaining the housing complexes, which include cleaning, security, and repair work.

While the decision has been criticized by some, the CHB has defended its move, stating that it is in line with the guidelines of the PMAY scheme. The guidelines state that beneficiaries should contribute towards the maintenance of the housing complexes, and that the fees should be reasonable and affordable.

T L Satya Parkash, director general of town and country planning, made a clear distinction between the obligations of the builder and liabilities of the allottees in a public notice published on February 22. The builder will be in charge of providing the fundamental facilities as well as civic amenities in addition to maintaining the infrastructure, or shared areas.

The PMAY scheme was launched in 2015 with the aim of providing affordable housing to low-income families in urban areas. The scheme provides financial assistance to eligible families for the construction or purchase of a new house. The scheme has been a major success, with millions of families across the country receiving new homes under the scheme.

However, the scheme has also faced several challenges, including delays in the construction of houses and the lack of basic amenities in many of the housing complexes. To address these issues, the government has introduced several measures, including the use of technology to monitor the progress of the construction of houses, and the provision of basic amenities such as water and electricity in the housing complexes.

While the PMAY scheme has been a major success in providing affordable housing to low-income families, the introduction of maintenance fees has caused concern among some beneficiaries. Many of these families are struggling to make ends meet and are finding it difficult to pay the fees.

To address these concerns, the government and the CHB need to work together to find a solution that is in the best interests of the beneficiaries. The fees should be reasonable and affordable, and the beneficiaries should be given adequate time to pay the fees. The government should also consider providing financial assistance to families who are struggling to pay the fees.
