Kochi Metro to add Airport Line as part of its phase III expansion

Synopsis

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is set to begin the Phase III expansion of its network, focusing on an essential airport line. The work is expected to begin at the start of next year. This follows the completion of a comprehensive mobility plan by a Delhi-based consultancy. The project includes two proposed lines, enhancing connectivity to Cochin International Airport. The revised detailed project report (DPR), reflecting updated population and passenger flow data, will be submitted to the state government soon. This expansion is expected to significantly boost ridership and profitability for the metro system.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is gearing up to embark on its ambitious Phase III expansion, focusing on establishing a crucial airport line. The work is said to commence in the following year. This development follows the submission of a comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) by a Delhi-based consultancy, paving the way for a detailed project report (DPR) that will shape the future of Kochi's urban transport landscape. The Phase III project, designed to enhance connectivity and bolster the city's infrastructure, will run parallel with the ongoing Phase II expansion, which aims to link the city centre with Kakkanad. The proposal under consideration suggests two new lines: one connecting Aluva to the airport via Athani, and another linking Athani with Angamali. However, these plans await final approval, as the CMP data is still being analysed. KMRL's Managing Director, Loknath Behera, highlighted the evolving nature of the project. The original DPR, drafted in 2019, needed to be updated to reflect the current population and passenger flow dynamics. The revised DPR, incorporating these new data, is due for submission to the state government by December. Despite these updates, the core aspects of the Phase III project are expected to remain largely unchanged. The significance of the airport line cannot be overstated, with the state government and Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) expressing strong interest in its concurrent implementation alongside Phase II. This line is projected to not only catalyse airport development but also mark a pivotal point in making the metro system profitable by boosting ridership. Discussing the transformative potential of the airport line, KMRL’s MD noted that this line will provide seamless airport access for passengers from the city and the Angamali region, just like in cities such as Bengaluru and Chennai. He emphasised that the profitability of the metro system hinges on the integration of multiple lines, attracting a larger commuter base. The new line, envisioned as an extension of the existing Phase I line terminating at Aluva, will traverse the national highway to Angamaly before veering towards the airport. Decisions regarding the number of stations and precise routing are in the final stages of planning. In conclusion, KMRL's Phase III project, particularly the airport line, stands as a transformative endeavour for Kochi's urban transport. It promises not only to enhance connectivity but also to propel the metro system towards operational profitability, marking a significant milestone in the city's infrastructure development. This ambitious project, aligning with global urban transit models, stands to redefine Kochi's metropolitan landscape in the years to come.
