Nashik plans strategic GIS mapping to expand revenue horizons

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is undertaking a significant initiative by implementing Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping for all properties within the city limits. Currently, there are over 5.2 lakh properties documented by the property tax department, with the GIS mapping aiming to identify even those not on record. In this comprehensive mapping effort, each property will be assigned a unique index number, housing essential information like built-up area and other pertinent details, accessible with a simple click. NMC officials emphasize that this approach will enable the identification of properties in use by residents that have yet to be subjected to property tax, ultimately expanding the tax net and augmenting civic revenue. To streamline the process and overcome a shortage of manpower, the NMC plans to engage a private agency for the distribution of property tax bills. This strategic outsourcing allows the civic body to redirect its focus towards recovering taxes from defaulters, ensuring timely distribution of bills for prompt payment by taxpayers. NMC officials highlight the broader scope of the mapping initiative, encompassing both authorized and non-authorized slums. This holistic approach aims to curb the proliferation of illegal slums, providing the civic body with a tool to monitor and manage urban settlements more effectively. For the ongoing financial year, the civic body has set an ambitious property tax collection target of Rs 210 crore. NMC Commissioner Ashok Karanjkar has urged civic officials to achieve this goal by December-end. Despite having successfully collected Rs 135 crore thus far, there remains a pending collection of Rs 75 crore in property taxes. In essence, this GIS mapping endeavour represents a proactive step by the Nashik civic body to enhance administrative efficiency, optimize tax collection, and address urban challenges comprehensively. The integration of technology, outsourcing strategies, and a targeted approach towards slum mapping collectively form a strategic framework aimed at bolstering sustainable urban development and financial stability for the city.
