A momentous stride towards digital governance unfolded as the state government launched a unified, single-window portal designed to streamline various services within the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs last week. The inauguration ceremony, held at Janata Bhawan, marked a significant leap toward a more efficient and accessible service landscape. This consolidated portal serves as a gateway for residents across 103 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), enabling them to access municipal services and other departmental offerings seamlessly.

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal emphasized the initiative's paramount importance in dismantling bureaucratic barriers, aligning seamlessly with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's vision for a digitally accessible service ecosystem. Singhal elaborated on the portal's comprehensive capabilities, which include online property tax payments, expeditious trade license approvals, and an array of e-services. These services encompass requests for drinking water supply connections, bookings for theatres and playgrounds, film shooting permissions, GPS tracking of municipal vehicles, and a robust online complaint filing and resolution system.

Historically, residents have been compelled to visit distinct offices for different services. Singhal underscored the portal's hallmark transparency and efficiency, empowering residents to promptly report issues such as malfunctioning streetlights. The system allows residents to photograph the problem and file a complaint, with officials committed to swift resolutions. Beyond enhancing citizen engagement, the portal provides a comprehensive repository of information about municipal bodies. This includes maps, demographics, details about mayors, chairpersons, and ward members, assets, program activities, and tender particulars.

Singhal highlighted how this comprehensive approach contributes to a more transparent and accessible system. Expanding its purview beyond ULBs, the portal includes services offered by entities such as the Assam Urban Water Supply & Sewerage Board, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, Guwahati Jal Board, Assam State Housing Board, Guwahati Smart City Limited and GMC.

This strategic initiative signifies a transformative leap towards accessible, transparent, and efficient public services. It stands as a testament to the government's unwavering commitment to digital governance, fostering an ecosystem where citizens can seamlessly access essential services, thus contributing to the broader vision of a digitally empowered and citizen-centric administration.
