The Government of Telangana has joined forces with Tabreed, a global cooling utilities leader, to create Asia's largest district cooling project. This ground breaking initiative begins with a substantial Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project for Hyderabad Pharma City, involving the development of 125,000 RT of district cooling infrastructure, with an investment of up to $200 million. This utility cooling-as-a-service model aims to provide sustainable cooling solutions for industrial units. The project is set to yield significant benefits, including massive power and water savings, a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and a more environmentally friendly approach to cooling in the pharmaceutical industry.
The Government of Telangana has embarked on a transformative journey, partnering with Tabreed, a global leader in cooling utilities, to revolutionize India's cooling infrastructure. This strategic collaboration begins with the ambitious Hyderabad Pharma City (HPC) project, Asia's largest district cooling Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
Tabreed is investing up to $200 million to develop 125,000 Refrigeration Tons (RT) of district cooling infrastructure for HPC, aiming to provide sustainable, long-term cooling services through a pioneering utility cooling-as-a-service model. This initiative integrates reliable solutions, enhances cost-efficiency, and leverages economies of scale.
A key benefit is the substantial reduction in energy consumption, projected to save 6,800 GWh of power—an impressive contribution to energy conservation. Moreover, it's set to conserve 41,600 mega litres of water, a precious resource, especially in arid regions like Telangana.
Most notably, the project will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, saving 6.2 million tons of CO2 over its lifetime. This aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and fosters a cleaner environment. The initiative will transform cooling practices within the pharmaceutical industry, making bulk drug manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad Pharma City more efficient and environmentally responsible.
Beyond HPC, the Government of Telangana and Tabreed aim to expand district cooling infrastructure in commercial districts like Cyberabad, potentially reducing peak electricity demand by over 200 MW and cutting 18 million tons of CO2 emissions over 30 years. Additionally, it addresses the heat island effect, making Hyderabad a more comfortable place to live and work.
K.T. Rama Rao, Telangana's Minister for Urban Development, Industries & Commerce, emphasized the government's commitment to environmental stewardship, aligning with the goal of making Telangana net-zero by 2047.
