The Haji Qasim Ismail Building in Mahim, owned by Waqf Board, experienced a dangerous incident when the third-floor slab collapsed, resulting in a crack and debris on the road. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries as the flats above and below the affected floor were unoccupied. The collapse was attributed to water seepage, which weakened the structure.

In response to the incident, 150 people from 19 families residing in the building were immediately evacuated for their safety. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation took charge of the situation, relocating the residents to the nearby New Mahim Secondary School. Some of the occupants found temporary accommodation with the residents of the neighbouring Kharva Bechar Chawl, who kindly offered their support.

Upon inspection by the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority and a contractor, it was decided to demolish the damaged portion of the building. The residents were asked to shift to either a municipal corporation building or the housing and development building during the repair process to ensure their safety. The building's poor condition prior to the incident raised concerns, and the authorities stressed that if further incidents occurred, the Municipal Corporation would not be held responsible.

A visit to the site by former Corporator Mr. Sheetal Gambhir, Deputy Engineer Mr. K.D. Patil from the Mumbai Repair and Reconstruction Board, and Executive Engineer Mr. Anil Rathod led to immediate actions to assess the building's structural safety. Fortunately, despite 29 families comprising 150 people residing in the building, there were no casualties or injuries during the incident. The evacuation took place during the peak hours of the evening, and the road around the building remained closed for traffic.

In a separate incident, soil rolled down a hill and impacted the roof of a temple at Khairani Road near Jangleshwar Mandir in Ghatkopar. As a precautionary measure, the BMC is relocating 100 people to Barve Nagar Municipal School number 1 to ensure their safety.

The Mumbai Municipal Corporation is taking the safety and security of the residents and occupants of the damaged buildings seriously, promptly responding to incidents and providing necessary support and relocation arrangements to prevent any harm to the people living in vulnerable structures.
