A cave-in near Magathane Metro station in Borivli East has resulted in prompt action by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and safety measures by the Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL). The incident was caused by deep excavation conducted by a builder for a private project, leading to the collapse of a stormwater drain chamber and potential risks to the station's foundation. The BMC has issued a stop work notice and filed an FIR against the responsible builder, while the MMMOCL is working closely with the BMC to ensure the safety of metro services and implement necessary measures at the site.
The recent occurrence of a cave-in near the Magathane Metro station area in Borivli East has sent shockwaves across social media platforms. Concerned citizens raised alarms after noticing the collapse, leading to a probe that revealed the cause to be deep excavation conducted by a builder for a private project near Entry Exit 2 of Magathane station. In response, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has promptly issued a stop work notice, and an FIR has been filed against the responsible builder.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Chairman & MD of the Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), assured the public that metro services remain unaffected by the incident. He confirmed that the body is determined to ensure there is no risk to the operation of the metro services. They are said to be collaborating closely with the BMC and the builder to implement necessary measures to ensure the safety and stability of the stormwater drain chamber, as well as the foundation of the stairs and escalator at Magathane station.
Following the reports, a joint inspection was conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at the site of the cave-in on the Western Express Highway.
Responding to the incident, the MMMOCL announced that adjustments have been made at Magathane Metro Station to prioritize commuter safety. These measures include the temporary closure of the northern side exit at Magathane station and the deployment of additional staff members to guide passengers.
During the inspection, it was observed that the stormwater drain chamber near Entry Exit 2 of Magathane station was in close proximity to the foundation of the stairs and escalator. The cave-in resulted from deep excavation conducted by a builder near the drain chamber, causing damage to the chamber wall and allowing stormwater to flow into the builder's excavation area. This situation poses a potential risk of further collapse for the drain chamber and the foundation of the stairs and escalator.
The BMC disclosed that the permission for the private building project on the land was granted by the building proposal department. The BMC is now considering taking action against the architect and consultant for their failure to properly assess the soil conditions and ensure the safety of the site.
