The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has embraced a pioneering approach by introducing the revolutionary eChhawani portal, propelling a paradigm shift in the realm of property tax payments for both residential and commercial properties. The results have been nothing short of remarkable, with a resounding success story to boast about. According to records, the total property tax amounting to a substantial Rs 38 crore has witnessed a phenomenal influx of Rs 10 crore by the initial deadline of June 30. This impressive achievement has compelled the SCB to extend the deadline to July 15, empathetically recognizing the challenges faced by families burdened with school fees during the advent of the new academic year.

Taking a proactive stance, the SCB is now prepared to tackle the issue of wilful defaulters, a group collectively accountable for an astounding Rs 5 crore in pending property taxes. Out of the Rs10 crore received so far, an overwhelming 70 percent has been seamlessly processed through the online payment mode, heralding a new era of convenience and efficiency. Gone are the days when individuals could conveniently cite office complications, staff unavailability, or server glitches as excuses for delaying their tax obligations. The advent of the eChhawani portal has eradicated these obstacles, fostering a culture of prompt and punctual tax payment.

Moreover, the SCB has embarked on an extensive assessment exercise, encompassing over 30,000 properties, to ascertain their taxable value. As a testament to their commitment, an additional 12,000 buildings have come to light through a meticulous door-to-door survey conducted under the Svamitva scheme last year. This comprehensive approach ensures that the taxation process is inclusive, equitable, and transparent. It is crucial to note that the SCB's efforts to enforce compliance do not stop at extension deadlines. Those who fail to meet the revised July 15 deadline will face a nominal penalty of Rs 100, signalling the board's unwavering commitment to accountability. Official notices will be expeditiously dispatched to defaulters, emphasizing the importance of adhering to regulatory norms and fostering a sense of responsibility among property owners.

The success of the eChhawani portal and the SCB's proactive measures exemplify a visionary approach to public administration. By leveraging innovative technology and embracing transparency, the SCB has set a new standard in efficient tax collection, propelling the community towards a future where timely tax payments contribute to sustainable urban development and enhanced civic services.
