In response to concerns raised by Mayor Firhad Hakim, officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) buildings department have compiled a comprehensive list of vulnerable buildings across the city that are at risk of collapsing. With the monsoon season approaching, the civic authorities fear that certain parts of these buildings may crumble, posing a threat to residents.

Having conducted inspections in various areas, the KMC officials have assessed the deteriorating conditions of these structures, identifying the urgent need for demolition to ensure the safety of occupants. As part of a special initiative, the authorities have already taken down hazardous sections of some dilapidated buildings.

The buildings department has expressed particular apprehension regarding several highly dilapidated structures in Burrabazar, Chitpore, MG Road, Beadon Street, Jorasanko, Jorabagan, BB Ganguly Street, Lenin Sarani, SN Banerjee Road, Elliot Road, Tiljala, Bhowanipore, and Kidderpore. However, officials acknowledge that the task of demolition will present significant challenges.

A spokesperson for the civic body confirmed to the press that it had 2,500 vulnerable buildings across the city. More than 300 are said to be a severely dilapidated state demanding immediate attention. Regrettably, due to limited resources and time constraints before the onset of the monsoon, the civic body is struggling to demolish all these hazardous structures.

The civic body has encountered considerable difficulties in evacuating numerous buildings across central Kolkata, including SN Banerjee Road, BB Ganguly Street, Lenin Sarani, Taltala, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Elliot Road, and Ripon Street. However, despite encountering resistance from some tenants, the civic body remains determined to tear down these structures' hazardous sections, with assistance from the police. By demolishing high-risk structures and implementing appropriate measures, the municipal corporation aims to mitigate the potential dangers posed by the upcoming monsoon season.
